I bought my first house with all new appliances about four years ago, and decided to stick with the OEM Whirlpool refrigerator filter the first several times before giving a name brand one a try. I'd heard good things about Brita pitcher filters, so I decided to go with it.
The Whirlpool ones had tasted funny and included a few particles at first; I followed the directions and ran a gallon or two through it right after install to cut down on it. The longest it lasted was usually a couple weeks. But it lasted a few months with this Brita one. My wife drinks water with almost every meal, and she refused to drink it until it had been in use for almost three months, whereas she couldn't tell the difference after a week or two with the Whirlpool filters.
It should be noted that the water tastes great now, so I gave it three stars.
Don't know if I got a bad unit or what, but I'll be going back to the Whirlpool OEM filters the next time the yellow light comes on.

I ordered this because my wife can really tell the difference if I have the wrong filter in there. Instead of sending me the Brita, they sent me a Whirlpool 4396508 filter, which is NOT what I wanted.
When I complained, I received this email:

Funny, I thought that the Brita filter WAS the aftermarket item. In order to return it, I have to pay shipping. They USED to sell the Brita filter, because I have purchased one from them before. In any case, if they don't sell the item then perhaps they should be more clear about the fact that they only sell the aftermarket version of the aftermarket item that you think you are ordering.

My family and I have been using Brita water filters for close to twenty years now and would swear by them. We started with a gallon filter unit that we filled with water and then used as needed. And we did use it for all our drinking and cooking needs. Now we have a filter build right into our refrigerator and it is even more convent to get a cold drink of water. The replacement filter we just got is great. You just twist out the old filter and twist in the new one, run the water until the air is out of the system plus a gallon or so and it ready. These filter do a great job cleaning the water and it tastes clear and cold. I highly recommend them.Customer Review: Don't Buy Into Brita Name...

I purchased this filter as a cheaper alternative to the "brand" name filter for my Whirlpool refrigerator. I purchased it in January, and replaced in with the "brand" name filter in March. I honestly didn't think it would make a difference, but it did. The water tasted awful with the Brita, almost worse than from the tap. It had a strong chlorine taste. I finally decided to replace the filter, thinking that it may not make a difference (that something was wrong with my refrigerator), but it was an instant fix. Buying the Brita filter over the Kitchen Aid/Whirlpool filter only saved a few dollars, and definitely wasn't worth it.Customer Review: Fridge Water filter

We have used the water filters from the Brita Manufacturer, for our Whirlpool refrigerator dinking water and ice maker, for some years now. They are obviously made to the standards required by Whirlpool and so therefore they fit, and perform perfectly, and up to the standards required.
We have found them to be very reliable, and long lasting, and we will continue using them. We can have them delivered readily to our door, and therefore eliminate the need to go shopping around for the nearest supplier. The price, when ordered through Amazon.com turned out to be less than going to pick up in person. - Perfect !
