It's a water filter. It fits my Kenmore 50259000. Without it, our water tastes and smells terrible. With it, my wife will actually use our ice cubes -- mind you, this has never happened before. I only give it 4 stars instead of 5 because it runs a bit slower than my Pur on-tap model used to. Might not be the filter's fault, though. After reading several reviews on this product I decided to try it out. I was looking for a replacement water filter for my Whirlpool outside door water/ice system. The original is SO expensive that we went nearly a year without using the system at all. This Brita filter works PERFECTLY. I have noticed no difference in flow of water, the taste is great and we have stopped buying bottled water! That is a huge savings for us. We have used the water filters from the Brita Manufacturer, for our Whirlpool refrigerator dinking water and ice maker, for some years now. They are obviously made to the standards required by Whirlpool and so therefore they fit, and perform perfectly, and up to the standards required.
We have found them to be very reliable, and long lasting, and we will continue using them. We can have them delivered readily to our door, and therefore eliminate the need to go shopping around for the nearest supplier. The price, when ordered through Amazon.com turned out to be less than going to pick up in person. - Perfect !
