Customer Review: Better than an electric stud finder

I bought a cheap electric stud finder which was a huge pain. You have to hold it very steady and slide it smoothly otherwise it throws an error. Since most walls have some texture it can be hard. It said to put cardboard down over the wall to help it slide better but it didn't help. It was a very frustrating experience.
So I saw this stud finder and it has been amazing. You just do a little s-ing snake like movement and the strong magnet gets drawn to the stud nails and it just hangs there. The magnetism makes it very easy to find the stud cause it is drawn to it.

This is the third stud finder that I have owned, and as long as I do not lose or break it I hope this will be the last. I concur with the vast majority of reviews...it works and it works well! Do not waste your money on battery operated stud finders. Whenever my battery stud finders broke or failed to locate the stud I always resorted to using a magnet and masking tape. This one works on the same principle but combines a level that rotates and is encased in plastic that protects the walls covering form the magnate. This tool even found my studs through exterior stucco walls!Customer Review: Strong Magnet! Very accurate

So far my purchase has been very enjoyable. It detects studs VERY well given its magnetic nature, vs some of the electronic methods and tools. It also has a level so you can use a plumb line to mark where you actually will be drilling. Unfortunately you have to install that plumb line yourself..
My only issue (which is what makes it 4 stars) is that the back side tends to scrape the wall and leave marks on the paint, but this is cleanable and you are likely to cover it anyways, hence the reason you are looking for studs in the first place.

This product will find a screw in the drywall, but that's about it. Our business has half-inch drywall over metal studs. This product will pull to and hold on a screw in the drywall, but WILL NOT give any indication of the stud behind the (half-inch) drywall. I can find a screw with a magnet costing about $1, so this item is nothing to brag about.
Granted, locating a screw indicates the likelihood of a stud, but one has no way of knowing if a screw is dead-center on the stud, or barely on it at one edge or the other. Save yourself the hassle and disappointment.

I've been looking for a stud finder for years that actually works. I've tried a number of electronic ones and sometimes it would work, sometimes not. Mind you, I've used the electronic ones on plaster and lathe. Not sure if that has anything to do with it not working.
I've used this one on my new house, which is all plasterboard. This product works, and works awesome. I don't know how it would work on plaster walls, but I can say that I'm very happy to have this in my toolbox. I would buy this again, and will probably order a couple more for friends.
