I was installing a heavy chandelier to the ceiling. Bought a rather expensive electronic stud finder from Home Depot. Thought it might be great in future renovations (it was advertised to find wires and such). After 20 something holes drilled and not finding a stud, I thought maybe it was too good to be true. The electronic stud finder was beeping on almost anything and nothing (was mostly irregular about what it beeped at) and it was annoying to use. I decided to return it and get the "STUD4SURE Magnetic Stud Finder" instead based on reviews.
We have metal studs and drywall is new-ish. The magnet stud finder found the metal screw/stud immediately. No more missed studs for me. Even got the TV mounted to the wall with its help. The builders had cut corners and placed the studs 24" apart instead of the regular as I found out with this stud finder. The stud finder's magnet is incredibly strong. Can recommend.

I have a good model Zircon stud finder with deep scan and electrical detection. This works great except for walls that have insulation between the studs. Unfortunately, these are the walls that I have to find the studs for installing my closet system brackets in 2 bedrooms! After getting too many false readings, ghost readings, no readings, and many missed studs, it came down to this magnet to find the nails in the studs. With thick plaster walls, the magnet won't stick to the wall, but you will be able to feel the magnet pull on the buried nail head. This tool is a little tough to use when you are finding the first stud, but once you find the first one, and after moving over 16", you can find the rest much easier. I still use the Zircon unit to find studs on non-insulated walls and for finding hidden electrical wiring. Just don't put this tool near your credit cards or PC!!!!

Honestly, I was skeptical when I read the other reviews. Most stud finders are far more expensive so how could a roughly $10.00 stud finder do the job? The answer it turns out is: "Very Well Thank You."
Thanks to powerful magnets you can stick the stud finder up on the wall and it'll hang there. Then follow the path it one of two directions and you'll find the stud if it's not obvious.
I did have some issues with studs in my ceiling. It could be all the plaster and my desire to not scrape the ceiling covering down on the carpet or another issue I'm not aware of since I didn't build the house. Perhaps there's more wood in the ceiling. So while I could still find the nails, it was about twice as difficult. The magnet will still jerk without touching the ceiling so it should work for you as well.
In short: This $10.00 stud finder should satisfy your needs.

I have an old house built in the early 1900's and it has the old lathe and horsehair plaster. I've tried all the electronic stud finders and all of them proved to be useless in my case. This one finds the stud every time because of the strenth of the magnet. because of the thickness of my plaster I have to hold it very loosly and it does not hang on the wall like it does when you use it on dry wall but you can feel it pull to the nail in the stud holding the lathe to the stud easily so you know that you are pretty close to the center of the stud and it never misses. If you use it on a wall with wallboard it will pull it right out of your hand. It is incredible. This stud finder does one job and it does it incredibly well. Anyone hanging cabinets or shelves has to have this. Forget the electronic ones that sense density and go with this. You won't be dissapointed.Customer Review: What a Stud Magnet!!!!!

After a series of failed relationships with loser boyfriends, my friends labeled me as a "dud" magnet.
