Tools and Hardware Reviews of CH Hanson 03040 Magnetic Stud Finder

Customer Review: Impressed
Summary: 5 Stars

We've never owned a stud finder before, but we just moved into a house and didn't want to go drilling holes and guessing to find the studs for hanging things like we did in our apartment. I was really impressed with the reviews and I decided on this over an electronic stud finder. It sure helped that it was so inexpensive. We just got it and it works great - I can hardly believe how strong a pull this magnet has to our walls! Our toddlers are always curious about our tools and this is one that I don't mind them playing with since it's enclosed in plastic and has no moving parts. The stud finder did look different on the website a week ago when I ordered it (it looks a lot more simple now). We got the newer version, so I was a little surprised when I opened the box, but I don't care what it looks like as long as it works.

Customer Review: Worth it .......considering
Summary: 5 Stars

It's just a super powerful magnet. Oh yeah and a 1/2 inch level which I can't ever imagine what I might use it for except plumbing a very very very small picture frame (I think I can handle that myself). It tells you where the nail or screw is in the stud regardless of whether it's offcenter or not. If the nail is off center you'll be off center too. It doesn't tell you where the stud edge is. If you need to mark the center of the stud you could be off by almost 3/4". But considering the price of tools that beep at the stud edge that actually are reliable, it's worth it. Plus it's tough to break and doesn't use batteries. Of course a simple rare earth magnet does the same thing. The power of the magnet sticks to the drywall nail allowing you an extra hand to mark where the stud is and hopefully it will be near the center.

Customer Review: Not very sensitive, and the wrong product picture
Summary: 3 Stars

First off, what I received has a small build-in level and is yellow and black in color. As far as I can tell, this is the new version. The picture shown on Amazon as well as the manufacturers website(!) are showing the older version without the level. Confusing. I wonder if the older version worked better..?

Anyways, we live in a typical, build in the 50's single family home with drywall.
Finding a stud with this stud finder has proven to be difficult. The magnets don't seem to be strong enough to find nails or screws that are in the wall easily. The finder will definitely NOT stick to a nail head and hang there, supporting it's own weight.
Maybe we have very thick drywall. Who knows.

Bottom line - this stud finder might be a hit or miss for you.
Not sure if I can recommend it.

Customer Review: Simple and elegant, but mind your application
Summary: 4 Stars

I love this device's simplicity of design and use. It is an elegant solution to a difficult problem.

I have lath and plaster walls in my home. Evidently the plaster is thick, the tacks are small, or the magnets are not quite powerful enough; in any case I have trouble detecting the studs beneath. It takes a light hand and sensitivity to the magnets' pull. Once I think I have a stud I can move straight up and down to find the adjoining tacks, but it is still a fairly loose and imprecise process - especially if I have to nail a stud dead-on. I can get a pretty clear idea where the studs are, but the stud finder will not stick to any of the tacks in my walls.

This is a simple and reliable product. I am satisfied with my purchase, but be aware it is not exactly a silver bullet in all cases.

Customer Review: simple yet effective
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered this a few months ago and was amazed by it. I used this to hang some speaker shelves and a mount for my plasma tv (along with several other projects) and I have yet to miss a stud. It's simply a powerful magnet in a plastic casing. At first I was skeptical and tried it out at home and was blown away. Just moved it along a wall in a figure 8 and it stuck to the wall where there's a screw (it sticking to the wall is especially helpful if you're working on a ladder (it frees up your hands so you don't have to hold it with one hand and then mark the spot with your other hand). It's slightly bigger than a double A battery. If you do buy this then make sure you use the little plastic [holder] to store it in (that way it doesn't get nicked up in your tool box and it won't stick to metal tools as much).
