The magnet included on this little device is more powerful than I expected. It works really well and the environmentalist in me loves the fact that it doesn't use batteries. The only real downside might be that the nails in the stud might not be at the level (vertically) of where you want to hang whatever you're putting up in which case you'd need to draw a line between two points or otherwise work it out.Customer Review: Works for me

Got this to hang my Plasma TV. I also borrowed the other kind of stud finder from my father-in-law. This works well for me, as this just look for the nails on the wall and usually nails are on 2x4, so it works. My Plasma is on that wall pretty securely and not coming down (knock on wood).
The other kind of stud finder didn't do too well of a job, since the wall I'm hanging on is the separator wall between my townhouse and the next door, I think it's got some pilewood boards, probably made it hard for that kind of stud finder to find stud.
That being said, this stud finder is just a big magnet, so you could theoretically get your own magnet and the do same trick w/o buying this. However, this magnet probably is bit stronger?? Plus the level kinda help.

I always drill into walls (being a college student i move a lot) and I always missed because of crap things. This thing is basically a super magnet, it latches onto nails on the studs. This sounds kind of stupid but it works amazingly well. You could throw this thing on the wall and it will latch onto the metal nails (it is very very strong). It blew my mind. I found every stud in less then 2 seconds. I 100% love this purchase. Customer Review: Works at my house, not at a different house

Just as good as everyone says. The battery-powered units I've used are easily confused by such minor things as wall texture - never dependable. This one is inexpensive and does a superb job. A real find!
