Customer Review: A Great Shelf With Sub-Par Mounting Hardware

I purchased this shelf to mount in my daughter's bedroom. Her bed is possitioned in a way that does not allow for a typical nightstand to sit along side. Therefore she needed a corner shelf to sit her clock radio and a few other small items on. This certainly seemed to fit the need. When the shelf arrived I immediatelly went to work at mounting it. There are two very poorly constructed wooden pieces that you must mount to the wall, with tiny screws, to which the shelf slides on to. Your walls must be at a near perfect 90 degree angle or else the shelf will not slide all the way on. This wasn't a big problem in my case but I can see where it could be a nightmare for someone that lives in an older house. The little wooden slides are so flimsy that one cracked as soon as I tightened the first mounting screw. I used some wood glue on the crack and put the other screw without tightening as much. I did the same for the wood slide mount on the other wall, making sure to barely tighten. I slid the shelf into place and checked out the finished product. I noticed that if I tug on the shelf, just a little bit, it pulls away from the wall very easily. This can be a problem and potential hazzard if you are mounting this in a young child's room, where it could likely be pulled on by little hands. The shelf can hold a moderate amount of weight, providing that you are strategic about distributing the weight very evenly.
Overall this shelf is very well made and quite attractive looking. The mounting harware is very poor and can break easily. The cost of this 12" maple corner shelf is low and therefore I guess you get what you pay for. The shelf itself is worth every penny but I wouldn't give you 50 cents for the hardware kit it comes with to mount the shelf. I would have gladly paid more money for higher quality, solid mounting hardware. Nevertheless it is a nice looking, fairly sturdy, light duty corner shelf for nick-nacks or a table clock.
