Tools and Hardware Reviews of Christmas Tree Lights On/Off Control OrnamentCustomer Review: Great for Compact Florescent and LED bulbs! Summary: 5 Stars
Buy lots of these at the acehardware outlet (to save on shipping). Why? It is the ONLY touch switch I have found that can do CFL and LED bulbs! All of the rest are "3 stage dimmer" type that can only be used with incandescent light bulbs. Since this is strictly an on/off switch, it works terrifically well for all sorts of lights! I can FINALLY get rid of the last of my incandescent light bulbs!
NOTE: Any piece of metal can be used to trigger the switch, just attach it to the green wire somehow (solder, screw, etc). DO NOT attach the sense wire to the lamp itself (if it is metal) as it will inevitably burn out sooner rather than later. That is exactly the issue I have with the wall mounted on/off switches that use the lamp or power cord itself to touch. Those type of switches burn out with months due to surges, spikes, who knows?
PS Now I can just wait for LED bulbs to catch up to CFLs and I will be happy (until there is a better LED bulb of course!). I already use a lot of LED rope lights from Orangetreetrade around the house (the stairs are lit at night now!).
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE 11-26-10 This device has one issue that surprised me. There CANNOT be too much metal or too long a run on the wire! I tried hooking up my overhead light on the enclosed porch. I Previously used a 3 way touch dimmer with a copper plate about 8 foot away before. Wanting to use CFL bulb, I tried using this with the copper plate. It would just not change when touched! After fiddling with it for a couple of hours I found that if I hooked anything larger than the little metal tree that comes with the device to the cord, it would not cycle! After splicing in a 3 foot wire, the only piece of metal I could hook up to the end was a small screw! I bought a wireless wall switch instead and worked out well.
PPS: a primer of CFL colors. Compact Florescent bulbs come in nice sounding packages that say warm white, cool white, daylight, etc. What you GET when you bring it home and screw it in is a different story. I have had "cool white" bulbs that were a muddy brown, and "daylight" with decidedly yellow cast! The only way to actually tell what you are buying is if the manufacturer puts the DEGREES K on the package. Degrees Kelvin is a way of showing where the light from the bulb fits into the color spectrum. Pure daylight is around 6000-6500 degrees K. Muddy brown is 2,700 degrees K (about where "normal" incandescent bulbs lay). So "warmer" means more yellow and cooler tends to be more blue-whitish. If you see a package of CFL bulbs without a degrees K in the description, DON'T BUY THEM. Find a brand that does list the color K and that you like the color of and stick to that brand. BTW, I consider 6500 K to be the ONLY true daylight bulb out there, all the rest are going to be much yellower.
