Tools and Hardware Reviews of Chamberlain 956CB Mini Multi-Function 3-Button Remote ControlCustomer Review: Works great with my Craftsman opener...and cheaper, too! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this when I was unable to find a similar type locally that would work with a Craftsman opener with the red or orange smart buttons. All the ones at my local Sears were for the purple model. The bonus is, this unit is much cheaper, even with additional shipping charges. Finally, the seller I used was very quick in shipping it, especially over a holiday weekend.
The remote programmed quickly and easily. For those who don't like manuals, here's the process:
The Door:
1) Close the garage door. You normally can't do this with the door open as a security and safety feature. It both keeps someone currently without access to your garage from programming a remote for it and keeps the door from closing on someone during the programming process.
2) Press the smart button on the opener motor unit, located under the one of the light covers. A little LED will light up.
3) Within 30 seconds, press and hold the button on the remote you wish to use to open the door. When it takes, the lights on the motor unit will flash.
That's it. If it doesn't work, either you did it wrong, the batteries are dead or you got the wrong type. This works with openers with a red or orange smart button. If yours is a different color, it won't work.
You can program the other two buttons to either open a second and even third door or you can use them to control the lights. Programming lighting control is easy, too. You'll need at least 3 fingers, so bring a friend if you've done too much wood working over the years:
1) Press and keep holding the remote button you want to program for light control.
2) Press and keep holding the light control button on your garage door wired control panel (the one on your wall).
3) Press and keep holding the lock control button on the wired control panel.
4) When the lights flash, release all the buttons and you're done.
Probably my only complaint with the remote is the size of the middle button. While it's a bit larger, I'd really like it to be even larger yet. I bought this so I could use it with my motorcycle. I keep it attached to the zipper pull of my riding jacket, since a full sized remote is hard to deal with when your hands are occupied and you're wearing gloves. The last thing I want it to have to fumble with a remote I stashed away in a pocket or bag. This remote is nice and handy attached to my jacket. It also is smaller enough to be less noticeable.
However, when it's colder, I wear my cold weather gloves, which are pretty thick. It makes hitting the right button harder when they're so close in size and spacing.
That being said, I'm not going to take points off for that. Most people aren't using it the way I do and the smaller button is less likely to be pressed when your keys are in your pocket. I just felt I should point it out.
Overall, I'm very satisfied and will certainly buy another should I need one.
