Tools and Hardware Reviews of Chamberlain CLDM1 Clicker Garage Door Monitor

Customer Review: Why have I waited so long . . . ?
Summary: 5 Stars

Recently, I had two issues with my garage door opening and closing on its own--both issues within a span of about two weeks. I was beginning to think we had ghosts. The first was caused by a defective remote control (subsequently, I replaced the old remote with a new one and that solved that), the second was caused by a broken connection in one of the floor sensors on my Genie door opener (I re-soldered the broken solder joint on a circuit board and that fixed that). Anyway, while in the house, I never knew if the garage door was open or closed (the alarmed neighbors did). So, after reading other reviews on this Chamberlain monitor--good and bad--I went ahead and ordered it. The sending unit is separated from the receiving unit by at least 20 feet with two walls in between. My friends, the monitor works perfectly and flawlessly every time. The receiving unit, which has a red light for OPEN and a green light for CLOSED is positioned withing sight from the kitchen, family room and the living room. It is comforting to see that GREEN light and to be assured the door is closed. The installation was so easy even a caveman (oops) could do it. The receiving unit plugs into the wall using one of those low voltage adapters. The sending unit uses one of those nickel-sized batteries, so I will have to keep an eye on it. The price on the unit was excellent. I asked myself "why did I wait so long to get this unit." Now, if I only had a receiver in my car, I possibly could tell if I left the garage door open after I drove away. Oh well . . . !

Customer Review: Works as advertised
Summary: 4 Stars

The short answer is: It works. My receiver is about 30' from the garage door's transmitter.

The longer answer is this:

The transmitter comes with adhesive-backed velcro to attach it to the garage door. (I added a staple through it to guard agaist it pulling off my older wooden door.) Being still quite new, I don't know how long the battery will last in the door-mounted transmitter (it's a large button battery). Hopefully it will have a long life.

The receiver, though perfectly functional, could stand some improvements:
(a) A simple paper template with markings for where to drill the holes in the wall to mount it sure would have been handy.
(b) It doesn't even come with screws to mount it to the wall!
(c) The AC adapter ("wall wart") is black. The color of the receiver is neutral, and looks decent on the wall, but the black wire running up to it is rather ugly. White would have been much better. I ran it along the baseboard and up the door trim (both white) so it at least isn't running straight up the wall.

I think a neat feature would have been to have it beep as the "open" LED flashes -- with a switch to enable/disable the beep. It would serve as a mini-alarm if someone opened the garage at night, or if a child snuck out through the garage.

But as I said at the beginning....It works.

Customer Review: A little more cosmetic boost is desirable
Summary: 4 Stars

I have left open the garage door a couple of times after I left home for work. And I found my neighbors left open theirs even late in the night. That's why I decided to search for a garage door monitor.

Among all the sensing method available in the market, this tilt sensor is most robust and does not affect by installation dimensional tolerance(means easy to install and fail-proof.)

It works as claimed. But the design has some more to go. The color is not creamy white, which would blend well to painted common household drywall. It is rather grayish white, like office equipment. And the wire to power adapter and the adapter itself is black. It it would have been white, it will be perfectly blend into house interior.

The price is somewhat high, considering the simplicity of this thing. I think total accquasition cost should be $30 for it.

Anyway, it will be a useful helper for who is forgetful or busy to take care all small things such as closing the garage door. Again, because I have seen my neighbors with open garage door by midnight, I believe mine will keep such a thing from happening to me.

Customer Review: No Support If It Doesn't Work!
Summary: 1 Stars

Bought this product to replace another one that stopped working. Two transmitters were learned properly, but third triggered a closed door light only when the door was open. Buy this only if your garage door is within a 100 feet of the receiver. Don't expect any help from the manufacturer. The technical support phone number inside the package sends you to a telephone call director full of options, but only pre-recorded instructions that you already have in the paper copy. NO WAY TO EVER SPEAK TO A REAL PERSON! You end up on the company's website and there is again NO WAY TO SPEAK TO A REAL PERSON! If the problem doesn't fit the cookie cutter they use, then there is an e-mail to technical support. I sent it on Friday the 21st, and got a message that they would get back to me in 24-48 hours. That ended up being 6 days, and they sent the same info found in the instructions in the package. I just occasionally forget to check and see if there is a live support number before buying stuff like this. Roll the dice. If you get one that works, great! If you don't, throw it away and forget about buying anything from Chamberlain again!

Customer Review: Mission Accomplished
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this monitor a few months ago and it's worked perfectly since day one. I have the base unit located one level above the garage on the opposite side of the house and have a good signal. I don't know if I would trust the unit blindly (after all, anything electronic or mechanical can fail on occasion) but it's a great confirmation device for what I *think* I already know.

I can't tell you the number of times that I knew the garage door was closed, only to second guess myself and go all the way back downstairs to check. Now I close the door behind me, see the green light on when I get upstairs, and never need to wonder from that point on.

Would it be nice if the base unit were a little smaller? Yes. Would it be nice if you didn't need to plug it into a wall outlet? Sure. But I think these are small trade-offs for the piece of mind it gives. Maybe the next generation monitor will incorporate these changes, but for now I'm happy with the way it is.
