Tools and Hardware Reviews of Chamberlain CLDM1 Clicker Garage Door Monitor

Customer Review: Not bad for the price
Summary: 3 Stars

Except for a couple of times when the units stopped communicating with each other, the system works as per advertisement.

When the inside-house unit loses its status with the garage door unit you simply unplug the DC power from the top of the unit for a second and then plug it back in. The communications resets and works again. 99% of the time it works but that 1% of the time you need to reset the system.

Helpful hints:
Use a clean flat surface to stick the garage door unit. Do not stick it on the door itself...use a metal part close to the edge.

Be careful of inserting the battery correctly. The documentation was a little vague on this point.

Esthetically, it leaves a lot to be desired. They never mention the ugly little antenna wire on the inside-house unit. But...that doesn't negate the usefulness of the system.

Suggestions for improvement:
Make the red LED light a little brighter.

Customer Review: Very Easy to Install, Works Well
Summary: 4 Stars

Being the unhappy owner of a tempermental garage door opener, I've been looking for a good garage door monitor. I believe I have found one in the Chamberlain. It installed in less than five minutes and does the job reliably. My only small complaint is the lack of a base to stand the monitor up vertically because I didn't want to drill holes to mount the monitor. I used self-stick Velcro to mount the monitor onto a small plastic stand I found in my odds and ends drawer.

Chamberlain sells additional sensors, so your monitor can receive signals from more than one garage door. I'm probably being overly cautious (think: belt + suspenders + duct tape), but I'm thinking of just the reverse situation; two monitors watching one garage door. One monitor in the family room and a second one in the master bedroom will increase the chances that someone will see the blinking red "door open" LED.

Customer Review: No contact with transmitters is a recurring issue
Summary: 1 Stars

Went ahead and purchased this inspite of past stated concerns about range issues.I purchased two units and both work equally poorly.I tried several locations but if the receivers and transmitters are not in the same room together there is the flashing green and red signals indicating no contact with the transmitter. I frankly think that it is more likely an electrical interference problem with these units than a range problem. We have a fairly high tech house with multiple wireless items eg.Security System,Internet,Cable etc. I think that if you have multiple signals being transmitted in your home that it simply interferes with the operation of the 'hook up' between the transmitter and receiving unit.I suggest that you take this into careful consideration BEFORE you purchase one of these units.Mine are both going back to Amazon today.

Customer Review: Garage Door Monitor - OK, but not perfect
Summary: 3 Stars

After unintentionally leaving our garage door open overnight several times, I decided we needed some kind of monitor. This seemed to be a good choice based on design. It was very easy to assemble and install... probably took less than 10 min to pop in the battery and affix the velcro fastener to the garage door and sensor/transmitter. When I tested it at close range, it works as advertised with the green light on when the door is closed and the red light on when the door is open. When I moved the receiver to a convenient location in my house and waited ~20 min, the green light and red light started flashing, which indicated a failure to receive the signal. I moved the receiver to a spot in my house that was closer to the garage, and things seem to be working now. But I was disappointed with the range of the device.

Customer Review: Worth the money spent
Summary: 4 Stars

It isn't the most robust device, but it was worth the money spent on it. The sensor attaches to the garage door with sticky back velcro. This makes it easy to remove to change the battery. I put it on the top of the door, so it will indicate open as soon as possible. Range seems sufficient. The only unknown is how long the transmitter battery will last. It uses a nickel sized lithium cell.

Update 2006-10-25: I still don't know about the longevity of the transmitter battery (still going strong), but I have loved this unit for the past few months. It has become a little "confused" two times over the last 6 months. It would indicate open, when the garage wasn't. I unplugged the base unit and immediately plugged it in and all was fine. I would purchase this again and wish I had done so sooner.
