Tools and Hardware Reviews of Chamberlain PD752D 3/4-Horsepower Heavy-Duty Premium Chain Drive Garage Door OpenerCustomer Review: Quiet and powerful - nice upgrade Summary: 5 Stars
My 10 year-old Chamberlain 1/3 HP garage door opener stopped working. The gear on top of the motor that grips the chain to move the door broke off. So I needed replacement.
Because I had an existing system to replace, most accessories and wirings are compatible. The protective sensors were reusable. So is the door lift arm. Wiring to the button (simple red + white) is the same, despite more functionality on the new panel.
The total job of assembling the new drive to its 5-piece metal beam and securing the chain took me about 1 hour. Taking down the old motor and beam and replacing with this new model and re-connect the wires and control unit took another hour. Adjustments on door movements and re-program remotes from three cars took another hour. Misc efforts in opening box, disposing old parts and clean-up took another. So 4 hours total without replacing sensors or pull wires. I am sure doing second time will only take me half the time. I am the only person doing the replacement, along with a 6' ladder and tools.
The motor is much quieter than my 1/3 HP 10 year old Chamberlain, which is highly welcomed! Instructions to adjust rolling up extra few inches or down are clear. The wired control panel is a nice replacement of a simple push button. I can explicitly turn on the lights, or lock out all wireless remotes (if necessary).
I was concerned about the 5-piece beam that lock together. It does vibrate during opening, but so was my one-piece beam that I replaced.
NOTE: There are a lot of comments that a properly calibrated garage door will not require that much power (e.g., 1/4 HP is plenty). I agree 100%. The 1/3 HP Chamberlain I just replaced had trouble lifting the door after 5 years of use. Trying to manually lift the door (after pulling the emergency release) would strain my back, and letting it fall would've crush anyone under. It's seriously dangerous. Then 2 years later the top center spring on the door broke. Unfamiliar with the size of the overhead springs and adjustment techniques, I hired a garage expert installer. After replacing the overhead springs and correctly adjusted them, the door would no longer fall hard on its own after lifting 5 feet up. As a matter of fact, it just stayed there! Pulling down or lifting up the door did not require more than 3 fingers! The installer/guru told me that's the way it should be, and garage door opener doesn't need to work that hard.
Now then why would I buy a 3/4 HP still? Call it a piece of mind. The springs will not stay balanced and will be off. The lubricated grease will need to be reapplied. Can't always all the garage guru like the way we change oil every 5,000 miles. So more power will come in handy.
Customer Review: I feel like I received a professional quality product! Summary: 5 Stars
A relative of mine installs garage doors for a living and recommended a Chamberlain or Craftsmen and definitely no matter what the cost, go with a 100% chain drive. Although I did not need a 3/4 Horse power, the price was cheaper then the 1/2 horse and the quality of the 3/4 is much greater then the 1/2. With 2 lights and another 1/4 more horsepower why not. I installed the opener today. The instructions like many have said are very detailed...(easy to understand, you do not need to be a rocket scientist). Simply layout the parts and put together in the order in which the book states. As many have also recommended I would stop at your local hardware store/Fleet Farm/Menards, Lowes, etc) and get some heavy duty brackets. The opener weighs roughly 20 pounds, not light but not heavy. The brackets could be stronger, but I'm sure they'd work if you don't get heavier ones. I used the J bracket from the old opener and cut 2 4" inch strips, drilled a couple holes and bingo heavy duty brackets for $0.00. The installation from start to finish took me and my Step Dad about 3 hours. We were definitely taking out time. The majority of the time was simply to make the wires straight and tight (me being a perfectionist). I do not see any problems in installing this by yourself. You will definately need a ladder (probally 5-6 footer). The machine is very quiet. The adjustments are straight forward and easy. On the first push of the button, the door opened 1/2 way up. A few turns of the adjustment knob and another foot, then a few more tries and it was exactly where I wanted. Samething with the closing. The safety beams/eyes are also easy, as they have colored lights which the other sees, simply line them up and you set. All and all, I am very satisfied with the opener, the instructions, quality of the product and the amount of time to install. I would definitely recommend to anyone. One final thing shipping to my door was 4 days (fantastic for free shipping).
Customer Review: Nice opener Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this as a replacement for 11 year old 1/2hp opener that chewed the internal gear drive. Installation was pretty easy as a replacement. I reused the brackets on the door and motor ceiling hangers. I decided on the 3/4hp motor since the door is fairly heavy wood that takes a bit of effort to get moving, and overkill seems like a good idea for reliability.
Installation instructions state it works on both single piece and segmented doors and includes instructions for both. I have a wood segmented door. A few extra brackets might be needed for the ceiling hangers for the motor unit itself and possibly the door, but otherwise installation hardware seems comprehensive, along with a few extra nuts, bolts, and lock washers.
I was surprised how quiet it is. The motor is no louder than the noise the rollers and hinges make. It took very little adjustment--I just had to increase the "up" movement to get it to fully open--no other adjustments needed. Safety stop took very little effort to trigger right out of the box and yet does not seem to stop falsely. Accepts up to two 100 watt bulbs and has plenty of air cooling for them.
Drawbacks include the staples for holding the wire to the sensors/wall button in drywall and the lack of room for larger CFL bulbs. The included staples don't seem like they will stay in my drywall for long without adding tape or otherwise. My 100w equivalent (20-23 watt) fluorescent bulks will not fit, though some of my smaller 60W equivalent models will fit. I stuck with incandescent anyway as they work better in the cold and I do not leave them on for long periods.
Overall very happy with this purchase and would definitely recommend this unit. I do not know about long term reliability as I've only had mine for a few weeks.
Customer Review: Same as Model 248735S sold at Lowes Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this to repalce an Overhead Door brand opener. This Chamberlain is noticably quieter and faster. This is the same as Model 248735S sold at Lowes. It works with the Homelink system on my car mirror. It took me about six hours to remove the old opener and install this new one all by myself.
The hardest part is connecting the big motor end to the ceiling. The installation instructions don't offer a lot of help here. I'm going to offer a tip. Lay the assembled operner (rail and motor) on the ground positioned exactly below where it will be installed. Use this to reference where to attach a hanging bracket across the ceiling. Make sure the ceiling bracket is screwed into a ceiling joist on both ends (before you start buy some 2 to 3 inch lag bolts and a sturdy ceiling bracket, neither are included) Then you can use bailing wire or a clothes hanger to hang the motor end and have both hands free to connect the supplied hanging brackets.
The slowest part was mounting the Safety Reversing Sensors and then running the wires. I had to use some scrap wood and make mounting blocks for the Safety Sensor brackets. Once I did that they alligned perfectly. As far as running the wires, invent a better wire staple and the world will beat a path to your door.
The easiset part was adjusting the opener (travel up, travel down, force up, force down). The design for this is really user frindly, much better than the unit I replaced.
My one complaint is the 110 volt power cord was too short for my application. I have adjacent eight foot wide doors with an electircal outlet in the ceiling centered between them, about five feet from the garage door openers. I had to replace the power cord with one only a little bit longer.
Customer Review: Solid, quiet, powerful, moderately easy to install Summary: 4 Stars
I'm quite happy with this garage door opener. I bought it because I wanted one with better security (my old one was the dip-switch style opener). This one fits the bill. It works great. It's super quiet (my old one was a screw-drive which is supposed to be quieter than chain-drive, but this one is WAY quieter; The door and spring creaking is actually much louder than the motor). It has a lot of tuning capabilities (force of door in both directions, along with open and closing distance). It's pretty fast too.
What kept me from five stars is the following:
- Lots of "part not included" when it came towards the end of the installation. I'm fairly certain that not including various mounting brackets and bolts is probably standard, but it shouldn't be.
- The arm that attaches the garage door to the track is adjustable in length (it's actually two pieces so you can customize the length before bolting it together). The problem is that even at its longest, it was far too short for my garage. I couldn't mount the track any closer to the door because the spring that balances the garage door was in the way. I had to get some 12" straight brackets from Lowe's and bolt it on to lengthen the arm. Of course, the holes didn't line up either... Just unnecessarily frustrating.
But don't let my complaints stop you from buying this thing. This is a really good garage door opener once it's installed. If you are doing a DYI installation, just be aware that you will run into some gotchas.
