Tools and Hardware Reviews of Chamberlain PD752D 3/4-Horsepower Heavy-Duty Premium Chain Drive Garage Door Opener

Customer Review: Garage Door Opener
Summary: 5 Stars

The Chamberlain PD752D 3/4-Horsepower Heavy-Duty Premium Chain Drive Garage Door Opener is great. Very quiet and easy to install. You will need a tall ladder or another person when you do the installation. When it is all together, it is heavy and you can not connect the bar to the door unless you can raise the motor as the bar will probably hit the door lift springs until you can get the motor mounted to the ceiling. The indicated 8' extension and remote opener are the correct ones. Everything comes pre-coded. You won't need to mess with the openers as they will work as they come. The batteries are even included. The motion detector on the inside opener control is great. It turns on the light and keeps it on until you stop moving for some time. I don't even notice that I don't need to turn on an additional light when I'm delayed hauling in groceries. Usually you get half the groceries in and the light goes off. Not with this unit. It is great.

Customer Review: Happy but underwhelmed
Summary: 4 Stars

Compared to my old 1/3 hp Sears garage door opener (installed in 1975, and which the Chamberlain replaced), it's quieter, and has a much bigger motor (3/4 hp). I wasn't as excited with the square tube and picture hanger wire that was to replace the Sears t-bar and 100% bike chain construction, and I really didn't like the cheap-looking plastic switch box for the wall. So, I used the chain and t-bar from my old Sears opener with the Chamberlain motor, and bought a decorative door bell switch to put on the wall. You might think I'm a gearhead, but it was really simple to mix and match parts. To make the motor fit with the old set up, I had to remove about 4 inches of chain from the loop. Bolt holes even matched. Adjusting the range and force was easy. Disclosure: I'm an older fart who never wants to program one more microprocessor. I like things over-engineered for strength and durability, yet simple in terms of technological frills.

Customer Review: Easy to install- scrimps on features
Summary: 4 Stars

The chamberlain I purchased replaced a Stanley unit that was 35 years old. The package comes complete, but you will need to build structure to attach motor unit to the ceiling. Instructions were decent - took me about 2 hours to install complete. There are 3 issues in the 2 months of service. 1) I installed the rail end above the door at the location where the old unit attached - bad idea! It needs to be installed as close to the door as possible (per the directions) otherwise door only lifts about 5 feet - just enough to get the car out. Will have to reset in the spring. 2)The remote will not sync with my in-car garage opener feature ( It did with the 35 yr. old unit). 3)Lastly, the supplied remote has limited range- must be within 5-7 feet of the door. Old unit worked from at least 30 feet away. Positives - Strong unit - lifts quickly and quietly. Motion Light sensor is great.

So far so good. Put in rental so not able to monitor but no complaints in a month. I mentioned my need for opener to a local garage door company to possibly have them put it in. They did not like the idea of snap together rod for the pulling contraption to ride upon which the Chamberlain PD752D uses. They recommend designs which use a one piece section for that part. Big deal? It does get into a bit of a swaying swing when put under load. I cycled it approx 15 times before turning it over to tenant. It never got so bouncy so as to upset itself enough to "tilt" / fail, stop. So, seems ok. Nobody else mentioned it. All the rest is very nicely designed and executed. Possibly to get this member stiff enough to sway less is unimportant. Could put cement / mortar inside the square section tube for that purpose - Can do that easily later.

Customer Review: Good Garage Door Opener
Summary: 4 Stars

Unit was easy to install. It took me over 10 hours over Saturday and Sunday to install because I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to attach the rail to the garage door header beam without adding any new holes since this is the third opener I am installing in this house and I did not want to make the header beam weaker with additional holes. Same situation with the top beam on the door. I also took advantage of the existing Genie sensor brackets and modified them to accept the new sensors. I gave this opener 4 stars due to it is not as quite as a screw drive Genie and I still cannot set the motor to stop before the door reach the open and close limits. My wooden door is heavy and hope the 3/4 HP Chamberlain last longer than the previous 1/2 HP Genie screw drive which lasted only 4 years.
