Tools and Hardware Reviews of Chamberlain WD822KD Whisper Drive 1/2-HP Belt Drive Garage Door Opener

Customer Review: Decent product but frustrating "for your own good" mandates
Summary: 4 Stars

I won't say it's easy to install, but it's not overly hard. The instructions are not very clear about how certain steps - I had to make up a decent amount as I went along. But it's not too much trouble to figure out.

But it's quiet, powerful, and seems to be good quality. I am a bit concerned about the long-term strength of the belt-bar - it comes in several small sections, jammed together.

It loses a full star, however, for the proprietary MANDATORY protection system of a light-beam and trip sensor, without which the unity will NOT function and surprisingly CANNOT be bypassed. I don't have any kids or outside pets. The unit already auto-reverses if it senses blockage; I don't need or want this "protect you from yourself" junk. By the way, the instructions say the mounting units for those sensors fit almost any garage door railing. They came nowhere close to being able to fit mine. The instructions recommend custom building wooden supports out of your garage to place them properly.

Customer Review: quietest door opener
Summary: 5 Stars

I had a Sears opener previous that died prematurely because the contractor that did my home only put one tension spring in instead of two. Still the Sears unit(made by Chamberlain) lasted 12 years. I could have fixed it for 30-40 bucks but I figured 12 years is enough. This belt drive was easy to assemble. I took the old one down leaving what I thought I could reuse in place. Anything that showed any sign of wear, I was going to replace but found nothing amiss except the bearing under the sprocket that failed originally. The new one bolted right in place. I replaced the sensors just because. Same with the wall button and push button entry.

I can't believe how quiet this garage door opener is. With the passage door into the house closed, we cannot hear it. Standing out in the garage what you hear the most are the wheels on the door. So much so that I ordered nylon wheels with 13 ball bearing to see how quiet I can get it. I highly recommend this door opener by Chamberlain.

Customer Review: Top rated and worth every penny.
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this unit after doing research on several consumer sites. It was highly rated and I must agree with the sites. The door is super quite, you can barely hear any noise. This unit replace a 9 year old craftsman chain unit, that was loud.

The unit is fairly easy to set up. I wouldn't call myself a handyman, but I am good with directions. I did the set up on my own in about 4 hours. I took so long, because the directions weren't very precise and I didn't want to mess up. Plus, I was doing it with no help. If you have some help, you may get this up and running in about 1 1/2 hours. I also used some of the old parts from my old set up. That may be why I didn't need some items that other reviews stated were missing.

Don't hesitate to buy this unit. It is highly rated and fairly easy to set up. Makes for an easy Saturday afternoon project. Great price on Amazon too with free shipping.

Customer Review: Only supports 7 foot door.. 8 foot Mod kit extra $$$
Summary: 3 Stars

The opener has been installed for approx 2 weeks and has been working fine after I overcame two significant problems

1. The opener is packaged to support a 7 foot door not a 8 ft door. I didn't figure this out until the installation was complete. I had to order and spend approx. $60 more to buy the 8ft extension mod kit from the mfg. The mod kit requires you to uninstall the unit (drop it back to the floor) remove front bar and replace belt and tension spring..

THE 7FT LIMITATION IS NOT STATED ON THE AMAZON WEB PAGE

2. The belt would twist slightly between the right side of tension spring and motor. The mfg. sent new belt and spring assy. which didn't resolve issue. I ended up modifying the spring assy and the opener is now running fine.

If I had known that a mod kit was needed I would never have ordered the opener $$$$$$$

Customer Review: chamberlain whisperdrive
Summary: 5 Stars

I just installed the opener today. Fairly easy to install. I was able to use some of the exisiting hardware from the previous installation so I didn't have to worry about hangers or the wall or door mounts. The settings were pretty close right out of the box for distance and force. This has all the safety features that I was looking for plus it is very quiet. It is below our bedroom so I went with the belt drive. Much quieter than the LiftMaster chain drive it replaced. Besides all the usual bells and whistles that pretty much all the combo sets have (2 openers, rolling code, outside keypad, safety beam eyes) it has a cool feature that lets you add devices from the wall mount so you don't have to get up on a stool or ladder to press the "learn" button on the motor. The 2 100 watt lights are nice and bright. So far no complaints.
