Tools and Hardware Reviews of Chaney Instruments Digital Alarm Clock with Green LEDCustomer Review: Do not buy this product, absolutely does not worth advertised price! Summary: 1 Stars
Just let me list cons of this clock, since it has almost no "pro"-s:
1. Indication is not GREEN, it's YELLOW.
2. Indicator is not a 7 segment LED. It is just painted like that, and inside each segment there are 2 yellow leds, nicely visible.
3. There's no built in crystal oscillator, this unit takes frequency from AC line (Silan Semiconductors SC8560 IC is used). This means, if you're in rural area with less stable frequency in AC line, you most likely will have 10 minute error per week. (Manufacturer saved $0.20 by not installing crystal oscillator inside). My grandpa's cuckoo clock had much more accuracy!
4. When on battery backup, indicator is NOT enabled, and also, clock starts to mess up the time wildly.
5. Overall build quality is very bad, with most screws missing, plastic having bad odour and so on.
I wanted to have reliable LED clock, so this is why I paid so much for it. But all I've got is the same quality and features, I can get for $2 at chinese fleamarket. So, Be careful when buying this clock.
Customer Review: JUST WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR Summary: 5 Stars
This is a good basic digital clock that is reasonably priced, easy to set, and has GIGANTIC numbers that can be read from across the room.
I was in the market for a clock because our new TV cable box doesn't display the time. This black Chaney digital clock fits perfectly inside our TV stand next to the black cable box and so is invisible except for the time. LOVE THAT!
There's a dimmer switch that allows you to choose either a high or a low setting -- the low being perfectly adequate (even through a smoked glass door), without distracting from our TV viewing.
I can't comment on the alarm function, since I haven't used it.
Warning: I'm so glad I read a review about a similar Chaney clock with a RED digital read-out which has a dot that blinks constantly. I decided on this clock instead, as I expect that blinking light would have driven me quite mad.
Highly recommended!
Customer Review: No Regrets Here Summary: 4 Stars
We see this clock from about 18 ft away and still think digits are B-I-G. Very simple setup - No manual needed. After about a month, seems to keep its accuracy. The Green LED is more pleasing to the eye (IMHO) compared to the standard red. I have it under the wall TV on a black entertainment center. The black background makes the clock almost invisible - just the digits show.
Since most often no one listens to the radio in a clock radio, a clock sans radio makes sense especially since most radios in a clock radio are terrible.
If Chaney Instruments cared, my little wish list would be: Eliminate the reflection from the clear plastic front - its a distraction and looks cheap. Also, can the green LEDs be brighter. Sometimes it shows like a fluorescent tube that is losing its fluorescence. IMHO, these two improvements would make the clock classier.
Customer Review: big display; flaky alarm Summary: 4 Stars
When I changed cable boxes I missed the clock on the old one. I needed a clock that could be clearly seen from across the room. This clock is so big it can be seen from space.
The alarm was a problem. I don't need an alarm in the living room. Even though the alarm switch was definitely off, and the alarm indicator was off, the alarm still kept sounding. I suspected the switch was not quite making good contact because touching it lightly turned the alarm off. But next day it sounded again. I ended up taking a couple of screws out and cutting the wire to the speaker. While I had it apart I could see the quality of the switches from the inside. It's pretty flimsy, so I'm not surprised that I and other reviewers have had switch-related problems.
But that aside, it does what I want for decent price.
Customer Review: Good Clock Summary: 4 Stars
I have bad eyes and needed a clock with big numbers. This clock works fine. The numbers can easily be seen across the room. The description states the numbers are green, but they are more of a avacado green, almost yellow. But that works for me, makes the numbers very visible. The dimensions of the face of the clock are 7 3/4" across by 3 1/4" tall. The numbers themselves are 2" tall by 1" wide. There is a hi/low dimmer for the lights. My only complaint is that its not as loud as I would like. I like my clocks really loud, so I don't miss school. I would rate this clock as being medium in loudness. Which is okay because some people prefer a less intense alarm. I haven't missed school, yet. The durability is the same as any other clock in this price range. Overall, I'm happy.
