Tools and Hardware Reviews of Cold Steel Kukri Machete with PVC HandleCustomer Review: Sorry to malign a scared cow Summary: 2 Stars
Though this machete seems to be (almost) everyone's favorite (at least for the price), I have a few `negatives' I'd like to vent. First of all, it has a terrible balance. Imagine that you picked up a heavy hammer, yet the handle/shaft was made out of 1/4 inch diameter metal tubing. The balance would feel pretty `off', right? Well, that's the feeling I get with this Cold Steel machete. Yes, I know it's a kukri, and the bulk of the weight is up front...but it should have a handle diameter that's `slightly' over-sized, with a secure-feeling grip, to offset the weight imbalance. This unit does NOT have that. I have a small hand, and the unit's feeble handle seems miniscule, even in MY small hand...as compared to the way it should feel...`substantial'. It just doesn't enable you to get a good grip to balance against the weighty front portion of the blade (not to mention sizeable enough to absorb the shock of striking something hefty). And don't get me started on the craftsmanship. Yes, for the low price, you're getting a high carbon steel durable product (so they tell me). But the black coating on the blade looks like it was applied by a 5-year-old getting his first lesson in finger-painting. I know that this is a tool, and will soon lose its `luster' out in the field. But if you were to go into one of those `home center stores' to buy (let's say) a screwdriver, you wouldn't pick the one off the shelf where the `enameled' handle coating was sloppily applied. You'd want to buy one that looked somewhat `presentable'. The same goes even for a machete. (I used to malign products that came from the "Big C" that had marginal quality control...but at least they looked nice.) Apparently, in the country (which I won't name), where this machete was made, producing a finished product that even `slightly resembles' the way it should be fabricated is considered `good enough'. This was my first Cold Steel tool, and it will be my last. My friend has the slightly more expensive Ka-Bar 'equivalent' (available also on Amazon), and he loves it. I guess I shouldn't have tried to save the few extra bucks and gotten the Ka-Bar.
