Tools and Hardware Reviews of Columbia River Knife and Tool 9070 Guppie Black and Grey MultitoolCustomer Review: Nice idea, not so useful Summary: 3 Stars
The Columbia River Knife and Tool 9070 Guppie looked like a really neat idea. I collect way too many multitools, but having been a farmer, a maintenance person, and now in the oilfield working at rigsites I use them many times each day. The Guppie looked like a slick unit with the adjustable wrench feature. While maintaining our equipment up on the rig and in our work trailer it sure seemed like it would fit the bill.
The problems arise from the the wrench being one SAE size too small- it only opens to 1/2" where a 9/16" would really come in handy. Most nuts and bolts I've encountered through my years of using tools are either 1/2" or 9/16". Past 9/16" you find 5/8" but I've got a million 5/8" combination wrenches lying around because if you don't use them you won't lose them and 5/8" is pretty uncommon. So if the Guppie went to 9/16" it would be at least twice as applicable.
The worm gear that adjusts the wrench has way too much play in it as well. If you put it on a stubborn nut the jaws on the wrench will open up and the spin off the flats on the nut. It simply should have been built with tougher materials and tighter quality control.
The knife is kind of weird, but sharp. The bit carrier/flashlight is kind of cool and handy, especially the flashlight. The bits are a little sharp on the hand when reaching for it in your pocket.
All in all, I'd have to say that if the wrench could open to 9/16" and was built tighter and stronger it would be a great wrench. I carry it every day, but mostly because I like the concept, not because it's really useful to me. I hope they fix the flaws, because then it would be awesome.
