Tools and Hardware Reviews of Conair GS4R Compact Fabric SteamerCustomer Review: Danger, Will Robinson!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I received this for a gift so I'm at least glad I didn't spend my money on it. This thing is terrible. I wanted it to get wrinkles out of nicer clothing and drapes, particularly those pieces with hard to iron seams, like faux wrap tops, ruffles, pleats, etc. And ironing can sometimes give some fabrics a sheen that is unattractive and hard to get rid of.
This thing is actually DANGEROUS. It worked for 1 small blouse and after that, all it did was spew boiling water on everything at roughly 8 inches- my clothes, the floor and worst of all- on me. I used it according to the manufacturers instructions and read them in full before I even finished unpacking it, and still I was getting burned and spurts of hot water all over me. It was sputtering so much hot water, it defeated the purpose on my clothing. Wrinkles don't come out of wet fabrics too well without a good heat source to evaporate it quickly, and on some fabrics, it can actually create wrinkles and spots. The instructions stated that if the fabric waterspots, to use it several inches away, but that didn't matter since it was spewing water like Pompei!
Oh, and it tripped the circuit breaker. Even my house knew this thing was unsafe and tried to protect me. It's on the way to the garbage. I've always had good luck with the Conair brand and was excited when I received it figuring it was trustworthy, but this is a shameful disappointment. I bet I could do just as good a job hanging my clothes over a pot of boiling water or in the bathroom when I shower. I understand the purpose of having something more compact for the occasional user that doesn't cost a lot of money and would have been perfect for me, but this really missed the mark and did way more damage than good. I also wondered what would have happened if a small child or pet got in the vicinity of the machine when it's running and got burned by hot water at a distance. It's understandable if one were using it improperly or if someone got too close and actually touched it, but this was standard use. I can only imagine the pain if it hit someone in the eye. One should not need protective gear to steam a simple dress.
Adding to the issues, the hose is so inflexible that it's hard to use without the machine pulling off the floor which I'm sure doesn't help matters, but the instructions specifically stated to have it on there and never set it on anything while in use. It was impossible to hang the t-bar on the door hanger without the unit being pulled about 2 inches off the floor on one side. The hose is long enough, but holds bends so tightly that It can't be pulled straight. For shame, Conair!
I imagine I'll be replacing this with a more professional model to avoid these kinds of problems. After this experience, I'm not willing to take the risk with other cheaper models. I'm all for being frugal, but this is one time where I got LESS than what was paid for it. I've noticed a lot of better reviews, so I'll concede and say that perhaps I got a lemon, but if I had known this, I wouldn't want to take the chance. I foresee a lawsuit in Conair's future...
Description of Conair GS4R Compact Fabric SteamerConair GS4 Compact Fabric Streamer This fabric steamer offers almost as much power as a commercial model but in a more compact shape for easier home use and storage. Equipped with an efficient 1,200-watt heater, this helpful appliance emits 20 minutes of continuous steam through high-velocity jets. The steamer safely removes wrinkles and freshens up curtains, delicate clothing, and bed linens while saving the expense and hassle of a trip to the dry cleaner. The T-shaped nozzle disperses steam in a wide path for faster de-wrinkling while the 5-foot hose and nozzle end stay comfortably cool during steaming. The fabric steamer's lightweight body weighs only 5 pounds so is easy to carry to the sink or tub to fill with water. Water level markings on the steamer's translucent blue sides show the maximum water level and when the tank needs refilling. For safety, this fabric steamer automatically shuts off when the handle is returned onto the body. For additional convenience, the fabric steamer has a 6-foot cord that wraps around the base for storage and comes with a door hook for hanging the nozzle and any garment. Conair offers a limited one-year warranty on this compact fabric steamer. --Cristina Vaamonde
