Tools and Hardware Reviews of Conair GS4R Compact Fabric Steamer

Customer Review: A fine starter steamer
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had this steamer for over a year. I initially bought it as a low-cost experiment to see if I could get away from ironing. At first I was very enthusiastic about the product, because I could steam dress shirts and pants much faster than I could iron them, and with acceptable results. I was also able to deodorize wool sweaters in about one minute. After a few months, however, I was frustrated with not being able to make creases, so I went back to ironing my shirts. But I found that it took such a long time for ironing to get a better result than steaming that it was only rarely worth it. So I'm sold on the concept of steaming, but I'm considering investing in a higher end steamer to handle dress shirts and pants. For my first steamer, it has been a fine product. I'd say that the experiment was worth it.

Customer Review: it works well
Summary: 3 Stars

I have never used a steamer with a hose before. I purchased new drapes and they were very creased from being in the package. The cost to have them steamed and then get then home without creasing scared me off. So I decided to get a steamer. The canister holds enough water to steam 4 panels, liners too. It worked great. I am not sure about the attachments. I tried a shirt and I will probably still dry clean or iron the shirts because I cannot figuire out how to do the sleeves and sides. But the trousers were easy and came out great. My only complaint was that it seems to sputter water and its hot and if the hand you hold the fabric with is above the nozzle the steam rises and you can be burned. But I love it and will be more careful. I am sure with practise I might even be able to do shirts.

Customer Review: Finicky

I've had this product for a year or so, and I've held onto it because I liked it better than the travel steamer I had before it, but it has a lot of problems. I can't fill it with more than a few cups of water or it spits up boiling water rather than steam, causing several burns on my hands and arms. Running it on so little water means I run out after only a few garments and I have to refill and wait 4-5 minutes for it to heat up again. There's no way to clean out the resevoir, except to steam vinegar, and then it's very difficult to get it to stop smelling like vinegar for weeks after a cleaning! Now it's developed a leak and leaves puddles on the floor. I'm shopping for a better brand to replace this.

Customer Review: Love the steamer-great price!
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this steamer for the purpose of blocking my lace knitting and it has worked wonderfully!

The tank is plenty large enough and it comes with a door hook to hold up the handle if you should need to do so. The hose is quite long. It feels very stiff when cold but don't worry, it softens right up once the steam starts to flow. And this unit creates steam rather fast going from cold to steam.

I have a rack on my ironing board that I prop the handle into. One thing, there is not a steam off switch so the steam keeps coming out when the handle is put up so keep your hands clear of the head when not in use! Other than that I would recommenced this to anyone.

Customer Review: Nice little steamer for the price
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this steamer for my studio backdrops based on a photographer's review on a blog that this was the cheapest alternative to buy that worked. I've never really used one before, but I had it setup easily without bothering with the instructions much. It did take about 5 minutes to start producing steam, but I wasn't expecting it to boil water like my Keurig. I just thought about how long it takes to boil some water on the stove and that's about how long it takes. It was taking out the wrinkles immediately and sure it's going to take some time to steam a background that's 10ft wide. It does the job and it fit my budget, and I'm happy I listened to the blogger that suggested the model.
