Tools and Hardware Reviews of Corona Clipper TP 6870 14-Foot Compound Action 1-1/4-Inch Capacity Tree Pruner

Customer Review: Tuly problematic
Summary: 1 Stars

Comments from other reviewers re the locking mechanism are unfortunately on target. The slipping defeats efforts to apply the necessary force to a saw cut -- and even trying to tighten down with big pliers (why should we have to??) will not solve the problem. Sadly, the bad news does not end there. The lopper mechanism employs a bicycle-style chain at the businss end, which would at first glance seem to be a fine idea (robust strength, and no rope chafe to be concerned about). BUT, inexcusably poor engineering of the guides through which the chain runs means that the chain itself can all too easily twist, bind, kink, and jam under load. So the pruning session comes to a complete halt, and we have to make a trip back to the barn for dismantling and clearing of the mechanism, on the workbench. This is designer error, not operator error. After having the same thing happen three and four times a day in regular use, we replaced the chain with spectra line, and thus solved the problem. Buyer beware, and what a shame that there are few other choices in the current marketplace. This could and should be a much better product.

Customer Review: Prunner
Summary: 5 Stars

I read the reviews and had doubts, but I needed something like this to clear the brush and limbs near the powerline coming into the house (don't electrocute yourself!). I bought it- shipped quickly and have been extremely pleased ever since. I have cleared all of the limbs I've needed to do for years and hadn't done- apple, birch, spruce, cherry, plum, maple, dogwood, Chinese elm - and it works great. I prefer the 14' length but it is just as effective all the way out. When I pull on the rubber rope handle - it slips, so I wrap the rope around the handle a few times then pull. It has tangled once or twice, but fiddling untangles it. The saw cuts quickly in both direction- handled 3" apple without problem, even moving limbs. But its the pruner that I really like. It beats using a handsaw from a 16 foot ladder, or a chain saw from a 10' step ladder (my old way!). Of course I have to drag off all of the brush I cut, but I get some help with that! -The limbs fall straight down, so one has to ready for that.
Great tool for tool minded folks.

Customer Review: Corona Clipper Tree Pruner
Summary: 1 Stars

An Expensive piece of junk. The tree limb pruner jams continously from wood fibers that build up inside the enclosed alloy hook. Once this happens, you have to get to the ground and try to clear the jammed in tree limb fibers which is almost impossible. Flat head screw drivers can only fit half way in the very thin alloy hook slot. Very frustrating. While using the saw, the extension screw lock allows the inner pole to slip. Try and tighten, (by hand), the "PLASTIC" screw lock tighter and "PLASTIC" screw lock breaks while continuing to complete the limb cut. Now I have a pole in two pieces that can not be put back together and a hand full of plastic screw lock pieces. Would rate the product with no stars but was not allowed. Would NOT recommend this product.

Other than the issues listed here, the pruner and saw did cut well when the pole was NOT slipping and the alloy hook was not jamming full of wood the plastic screw lock broke - Um, back to being an expensive piece of junk.

Customer Review: No need to call professional tree service

I was hesitating to make the purchase due to the price and review comments, but I have purchased Corona Clipper products in the past, so decided to see it for myself.

The lopper works great on branhces with reasonable diameter. The chain runs smoothly. The Razor Tooth Saw blade is sweet. I use this feature more than the lopper.

On tougher cut, the extension rod SLIPS OUT. I tighten up the lock some more by hand. It works great after that. But then, the lock is too tight to loosen up. I find a strap wrench is pretty handy. You can get this at Home Depot in the Plumming section. Since it wraps around the lock evenly with a nylon strap, it should not break the plastic lock. Remember to apply the force slowly.

Too bad other people had bad experiences with this tool. I hope you give it a shot and see it for yourself.

Customer Review: Corona Clipper TP 6870 Tree Pruner
Summary: 4 Stars

One of the first things I did (noting that some fasteners were not tight), was to install lock washers under each and every removable nut to promote stability and preclude the loss of any of the fasteners. The tree pruner appeared to be well constructed and proved itself in two different weekends of significant tree pruning. The Corona tree pruner was stable and solid whether extended or not. It was very effective and comfortable and, proved itself in heavy use so far. Hopefully, the Corona's stability and effectiveness will continue to demonstrate itself in future use.
