Tools and Hardware Reviews of Cosco 11120RED1 Retro Chair/Step Stool, RedCustomer Review: Just what I had hoped for Summary: 4 Stars
I bought 2 of these stools to go along with my original Cosco Step Stool, inherited from my Nana. As a child, I used to sit on it in her kitchen. Now it sits in my kitchen, is called The Nana Stool, and is fought over by my grandchildren. Hence the need for a couple more. I can tell you the stool is the same size as the original (perhaps a half inch shorter) and the seat is EXACTLY the same size as the original. It is, however, more comfortable due to the padded seat and back. The steps mechanism is different, but actually easier to use (the original requires a lift and pull technique that my grandchildren have had to be taught, while the new ones simply pull straight out). The framework is more robust and the stool is slightly heavier than the original. It's not a 5 star because I don't know how long the padding on the seat will last, but looks easy enough to replace if and when necessary. I don't know if the plastic runner for the steps will last the 50+ years of the original metal but as I'll never know whether it made it to my grandchildren's kitchens and got sat on by my great great grandchildren, it looks fine to me. Because of the tension required in the frame, it can be a bit tricky to put together. Advice: when it says loosely fix the screws, it means LOOSELY fix the screws until everything is in place. Overall, I am delighted with them. I only wonder if I need to get a couple more so each of my children can have one as part of their inheritance.
Customer Review: Just like Grandma's, only new! Summary: 5 Stars
This stool is great. The red color is just right, not orange-y like someone said in another review. It is crayola red. And there is a plastic track, but it seems sturdy; and I like the straight across action better than Grandma's because the jump-over style is clumsy. It is EXACTLY THE SAME SIZE AS THE VINTAGE...not bigger, not smaller. Whoever said it is too small isn't remembering it right. We were all a lot smaller when we visited Grandma, so the chair may have seemed bigger back then! I have Grandma's chair right beside it and the dimensions are the same. This has spurred me on to refinish the old one in yellow, since the old one looks pretty sorry next to the new one.
I'll have to say though that it was a pain in the butt to put together. It took me the better part of an evening and my husband had to jump in for elbow grease. Seems like it could come in fewer pieces and a bigger box with some of it put together already. But it was totally worth it. I love the look and it seems plenty sturdy to me, though some reviews said it wasn't. It sat a bit unlevel (poor assembly on my part maybe) so I put a quarter in one of the rubber feet and it sits great now.
I would recommend it to anyone that is decent with putting stuff together. It looks great now. After reading reviews I almost didn't buy it, but I'm glad I did. I have never left a review before, but I felt like I had to tell you guys how great it is!
Customer Review: Assembly Almost Impossible Summary: 1 Stars
Just got this chair yesterday. Thought, okay, other people are being whiners about the assembly. Not so. The second thing you put on is the back - and the bolts they give you will not hold it on safely. I ended up getting our own longer bolts to put the back on with so that I don't have to worry about my kid falling out when the back breaks off. I had only one part where I was able to get the bolts in without sheer misery, the bottom step of the stool. Good thing they give you extra bolts - because you end up stripping off half of them. And I still used several of my own. I do not mind the stools sliding out rather than the hidge on the old models as I also remember getting pinched on the old ones and how heavy they were. So, that will not be my complaint. But, the assembly is too painful to make this thing worth it. I still have bolts falling off that I just can't get in. The top step of the stool has one (I think the threads where I am bolting it into are all wrong) and the plastic side rails are IMPOSSIBLE as they are just not quite wide enough for where they are supposed to go, so the bolts are at an angle. Yes - I even used one of my husbands super clamps to try to get them on by squeezing the legs together. It took 3 hours of MISERY and like I said, I have a stool, it's still not all assembled. And, yes, I do know how to assemble products and use a screw driver.
Customer Review: 50's Nostalgia in a Fire Engine Red Stepstool ! Summary: 4 Stars
This stool is a handy dandy piece of equipment. We have used it for a variety of purposes.
The stool is solid, and I think rather heavy...which is both good and bad. The chair bears a condierable amount of weight, but the heft makes it slightly cumbersome to move.
The major drawback of the stool is that the steps are on glides instead of hinges. I don't know what synthetic material the glides are, but I do know that some synthetics (plastics) are actually stronger and last longer than aluminum alloy metals. The problem is not the glides themselves, but that steps will slide out when moving the chair (if the chair is tilted forward). We have gotten used to carrying the chair, from room to room, when it needed to be moved, with the chair slightly tilted backward. No biggie.
The size of chair is a plus for us. It fits in tight spaces and cramped rooms very easily. No oversized adult (including myself) making an impromtu visit has complained of discomfort from sitting on the stool. As matter of fact, the stool is preferred to lower seating and requested by many, especially seniors.
Its a gas!
Customer Review: Definitely not the real thing... Summary: 4 Stars
I got this item about four days ago and was a bit dismayed when I saw some of the plastic parts, like the "sleeves" on the base of the seat that the legs are supposed to be screwed into, and the two plastic tracks that the glider pins on the steps move along when they're pulled out.
It really was a huge pain to assemble, but with some muscle we managed to put it together.
Once assembled, it does seem a lot more sturdy than one would expect given the plastic parts and the relatively light weight of some of the metal parts.
When moving it from one place to the next, it's necessary to hold onto the bottom (the steps) or else one of the pins will come out of the track, which was what happened today. I thought it would have to be taken apart to put that pin back in the track but twisting the stairs just a bit made it possible to slip the pin back into place.
OK, so it's not the all-metal behemoth we remember from our childhoods, but it's sturdy enough to support my weight...let's just say I am a bit "zaftig"...and the red color looks great in my kitchen. Really brightens it up and makes it cheerful.
If you have the patience to deal with parts that aren't exactly precision made, it's a pretty good deal and I hope it lasts as long as my previous very heavy stepstool did (14 years).
