Tools and Hardware Reviews of Cosco 11120RED1 Retro Chair/Step Stool, Red

Customer Review: Nice, but not like the originals.
Summary: 3 Stars

I grew up with a cosco step stool chair. Many memories watching my folks making me a snack or lunch after preschool. I wanted to have the same for my 3 year-old son.

After taking much more time than I thought, my dad and I got this put together. (Not very confusing, but a few of the pieces were really tight fitting.) The first thing we both noticed was how sturdy is was NOT compared to the original one from 30+ years prior. The second thing we noticed is that the step stool part that goes in and out from under the chair moved way too easy. The one we both remebered had some type of lock mechanism to keep it in place. This one had nothing to lock it.

My son got on the stool and loved everything except for the moving steps underneath the chair. I found a couple of electrical cable ties in the garage and tied the steps into place so that they could not be moved under the chair. My son totally loves it now. He can climb up and down the chair to watch me make a meal or just to show what a big boy he is.

Overall, a nice addition to the house and some great memories to be had with the chair. I hope Cosco addresses the easily movable steps.

Customer Review: Not worth it...good looks but nothing else
Summary: 1 Stars

I received my retro step stool today and was so excited to put it together. It was a very disappointing process.

The quality of the materials is poor. The chrome and painted metal has many flaws. Some of the paint chipped when tightening screws with a manual screwdriver.

The vinyl is not put on nicely and it is so thin that if you where to sit on it with a button or zipper in your clothing it would probably tear.

Also, the fit of the parts is not good, and even when it is tightened up it is still very wobbly and does not feel sturdy at all.

Probably most disappointing, is that the seat is very uncomfortable. There is not much padding, the front edge digs into your thighs, and the seat is too small to accommodate the average female behind.

All in all, a total waste of time and money. If it hadn't been such a pain to put together, I would send it back.

As it is, it will end up in the basement or in a garage sale. Too bad...I would have happily paid twice as much to have a quality product that was actually usable.

Customer Review: Great litte step stool
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a bit skeptical before I ordered this stool but I figured since the price was reasonable, I'd go for it.
My kitchen counters are not at a comfortable height so when I'm preparing foods for any length of time, often my back aches...this stool was the answer. Now I can sit comfortably with no problems.
Putting the stool together was reasonably easy, although, some of the screw holes were a bit rough, making it difficult to get the screw threads started, but once this was accomplished, the rest was okay, (although, it took me a bit over an hour to assemble it.)
It does resemble the stool my mother had in her kitchen many moons ago, however, if I recall correctly, hers' wasn't padded, instead it had a painted seat and back.
I'd recommend this stool, I haven't seen anything else that even comes close, especially for the price.
Kudos to Amazon for fast shipping, my order arrived in great condition in just a few days, even without special shipping!

Customer Review: When they say Made in China, they mean it!
Summary: 2 Stars

I am 0 for 2 on this step stool. I was excited to get it b/c my mom has the same one, but she was lucky enough to buy a pre-assembled model. The first one came with stripped screw holes, so that the back of the seat popped off. Not safe. Returned that one, and bought another, hoping for better results. My husband, who is a pretty handy guy (and very low key) had a TERRIBLE time assembling it. Pieces were bent, holes didn't line up, metal pieces hadn't been entirely punched through -- a complete disaster. After much cursing, bending pieces, and gerry-rigging, he managed to put it together, but we're not sure how long it will last. It's cute enough, but it doesn't feel safe for my little kids or me to climb on. And the seat and seat back are only moderately comfortable. The final verdict: this thing is junk, and if it weren't such a pain to return it to Amazon, I'd send it back in a heartbeat. Disappointing!! Save yourself a headache and look for something better.

Customer Review: Cosco puts the Ass in Assembly!
Summary: 2 Stars

Most of the assembly components on this stool are absolute crap. The brackets don't line up, even though I followed the instructions to the letter, facing the arrows in the correct direction. And the track which allows the stool to slide forward and back is cheap, flimsy plastic; and again, had the assembly holes molded in the wrong location to line up with the matching brackets.

I got it put together as best as I could; but it was extremely wobbly and lopsided, thanks to the unbalanced brackets. And the steps are teeny tiny! My 20-month-old son had a hard time balancing himself on the bottom one, which stinks since we bought it for him as a big boy chair.

I disassembled it as best as I could (since I stripped the screws, trying to force them into the asymmetrical holes), and sent it back to Amazon. At least they have a generous return policy, and arranged a prepaid UPS pickup for the rebound shipping.
