Tools and Hardware Reviews of Crawford-Lehigh RC40 40-Feet Retractable ClotheslineCustomer Review: Satisfactory Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this product because i live in an apartment building that does not allow clotheslines on the balconies. I decided to hang the line near the balcony door to allow light and air to flow through. i had to spray paint the unit, because it is not an actual true white (more gray) so that it would blend into my wall. It is still large (approx 8inches across), so it doesn't quite blend in.
the line itself is very well made with the plastic coating. and the retractor is very fast so be careful with retracting. on the unit there is a piece that allows you to wrap the line so that it wont retract. I have done so, but i notice the line is still not taut and slopes downward.
If your intended use is to hang on drywall, I would highly recommend purchasing additional hardware. since i wanted to hang more than one piece of clothing. the hardware that was provided is very lightweight and easily rips out of drywall. i had to purchase larger, longer hooks and screws to drill into my drywall and studs.
Customer Review: For light loads only Summary: 3 Stars
Works adequately for light loads (t-shirts, socks and under things) but the line slips when there is too many items on the line even when wrapped around the peg per the instructions. Perhaps if the line was not so slick this wouldn't happen. Jeans and heavy cotton towels cannot be hung from this line when extended out to its full length.
I purchased this retractable clothes line to use while looking for a replacement for my electric clothes dryer that had died. Installation is fairly simple. I attached the retractable unit on to the side of my house on an exterior window frame. The hook for the line is attached to a tree approximately 40 feet away. I extend the line to the hook in the tree, wrap the line around the peg per the instructions and then adjust the tension and try to get as taught as possible.
Overall I'd say this product works as expected for light loads and is worth the money paid. I've only used this product for 1 summer so only time will tell if it is durable.
Customer Review: Glad I Bought It Summary: 4 Stars
I really like my clothesline! I hung it between my privacy fence and my deck, and it's the perfect spot for it; I like that when I'm entertaining, I can just let it retract and it's out of sight.
That said, it could be better designed as far as the retraction goes.
The problem comes in when you're not using the full 40 ft. When open and in use, you have to loop it around the little pedicle at the bottom of the housing to keep it from retracting and to keep the line taut. However, looping it around and keeping the line super-taut at the same time is nearly impossible, so the line does sag a little too much. Because I hung the line so high up, it's okay as long as I double my sheets when hanging them, but otherwise they would drag on the ground. In effect, it takes longer for sheets to dry.
I would recommend using this clothesline, and I plan on purchasing another one of these. But I think the manufacturer should consider fixing this little glitch.
Customer Review: SAVE YOUR MONEY - Get old-fashioned clothesline rope and hooks Summary: 1 Stars
I have tried every brand of these retractable clotheslines. They are all cheaply made, inferior products. The locking mechanisms don't work. The hooks are too weak and break. The inadequate, soft-cotton/poly lines coated with vinyl sag and need to be knotted again and again to restore a modicum of tautness, so that the retractable feature is rendered useless. I have the line extended a little more than 25 feet, but it is supported in the middle by a line attached to a large wooden beam. The support hasn't helped. There are materials available that would work better, but that would reduce the profit margin and the ever-on-going repeat sales. Tomorrow, I will install low-sag clothesline rope and sturdy eye bolts. Perhaps a retractable clothesline is a great idea, but the execution by every manufacturer (they all appear to be made by the same factory) is shamefully poor.
Customer Review: Worked ok for about 6 months, but not great even then Summary: 1 Stars
I got this because we're renting and I didn't want to install anything permanent. Initially I was disappointed because even when I wrapped the cord around the hook on the bottom of the unit, it still sagged. It really takes a lot of strength to pull the line taut enough while you wrap it around the hook. My husband used his muscle to get it tight enough to work, but that sort of defeats the purpose of retractibility if I have to get my husband to set it up each time I want to use it. It worked well for a while, but this weekend I went to use it after its been out in the FL sun all summer and after I hung a half-load of wet laundry on it, the plastic loop that holds the end to a hook just snapped, perhaps from sun damage. We tied it to the hook so it will still work, but in retrospect, I would just spend a little more to get something more permanent.
