The steel is hard and smooth, which is exactly what we need in a burnisher. It required no extra polishing.
The handle feels comfortable, and the shape provides some protection against cuts. It's easy to slash your hand on a scraper edge as you burnish. That's why some expensive burnishers come with hand-guards. That is a good idea. However, I refuse to pay extra for a piece of machined brass. Instead, I just cut a chunk of wood or leather, put a hole in it, and slip it on the shaft. I prefer the leather-guard because I can make it very large to protect my entire hand, yet it folds-up compactly when I put it back in the drawer. For this burnisher, I don't even use that trick. The handle-shape is good enough.
Unless you want a fancy machined hand-guard, or a specialty-burnisher for exotically shaped scrapers, this is one of the best bargains you'll find. It's simple, elegant and works great right from the box.
There is NO functional difference between this economical burnisher and any of the fancier, expensive models. The traditional-design handle is pretty, easy-to-hold and fairly safe as-is.
This is one of the few tools you can afford to spare-expense on without compromising performance.

Burnishers are required tools for cabinet scraper users. After scrapers have been squared with a mill file and fine sharpening stone, these hardened steel bladed tools turn over the thin cutting edge that make scrapers operate so effectively.
