Customer Review: Works well without instructions

As the title infers, the "instructions" that came with the appliance were useless. I'm serious. This was my first install of an R.O. system, so I did my homework via online and the local plumbing supplier. I'm pleased to share with you that my install only required one extra trip to the store for parts. Can I get a hell yeah.
I know enough about home projects to be dangerous, but I could defintely see how this would give someone fits that don't have a lot of knowledge of plumbing or general DIY tomfoolery. The included packet of info included a elaborate, confusing, non-sensical barrage of schematics and "scenarios" that were initially impossible to follow, as the booklet referred to 4 different R.O. systems pictured on the cover but then were not sorted out within the booklet. Thank God for youtube, as I was able to find a recorded R.O. install. Very helpful.
It seemed a good idea to secure all fittings prior to installation, and wrap all threaded pieces with pipe tape prior to attaching rubber hoses. Good preventative maintenance, and you'll be proud of yourself. I know I'm proud of you for doing this.
If I do this again, I will follow the same procedure. Hooking up all the under-sink lines first. The 'feed' line that will supply water from your cold water line to the R.O. system first. Then, hook up the 'waste' line for the, well, waste. The parts included the saddle fitting for said waste line. Pay attention here: When I went to feed the waste tube through the saddle fitting (you need to do this before connecting it to the drainage pipe, it was discovered that the opening in the black plastic saddle fitting wasn't large enough in diameter to allow the rubber waste line to be wriggled through. So without wanting to damage the waste line, I reemed out that opening on the saddle fitting to 1/4" with a drill bit, so the waste line would snugly fit through and into the pre-drilled hole on the discharge line under the sink. This should be installed AFTER the pea trap of your drainline.
I then made sure of where I was drilling for the R.O. tap on the sink, and drilled a 1/2" hole and mounted the tap and connected the hose to that underneath.
So this is what I have ready:
1. The feed line is hooked to the water supply line, with a shut-off valve in-line, so the water to the R.O. can be turned off for servicing while still being able to use the sink faucet.
2. The waste line is attached to the drain line of the sink - after the pea trap. It is important to note that the system comes with a pressure regulator that inserts into one end of the waste line tube. this is the end that will attach to the R.O. system - not into the drainage line.
3. The tap is mounted with the rubber hose connected as well and is hanging down ready to be attached to the R.O. system.
4. I put the big metal tank in place under the sink, and connected the 4th hose to the top of it. I also used pipe tape on all the fittings of the tank to prevent leaking.
After scowling and attempting to follow the schematic in the book around with my forefinger to make sure I was going to attach all the hoses in all the right places, I carried the R.O. system down to the floor and one by one began connecting hoses. Prior to this, I took blue painters tape and labled each connection on the R.O. filter assembly so I wouldn't hook the feed line to the waste end and so on and so forth. This helps me keep things straight and might help you too. Hey, first time installer, I'm wired with coffee and have Pink Floyd playing. Not to mention I keep eyeing the homeowners ping pong table. Whatever - I'm easily distracted, but my work doesn't suffer.
Lines were attached and I rested the filter assembly on the sink cabinet floor. I chose not to mount them to the side of the cabinet inside. It was unnecessary.
Once the system was turned on, as mentioned, some black water shot out through the waste line and looked just awful. This only took a few seconds to disappear. (The waste line should be a clear tube so you can see the color of water coming out). It took a while for the air and water to navigate through the system and I flipped up the tap above the sink to let it sputter out. It was recommended to run about 4 gallons of water through it. This takes a while as it needs to build up a reservoir in the tank. After about 2 gallons, I tasted it and voila, pure clean water.
The system seems to be good, but the instructions were useless because there were none. Hope this helps.
