Tools and Hardware Reviews of Culligan FM-15A Level 3 Faucet FilterCustomer Review: Great tasting water at a great price! Summary: 5 Stars
Very happy with this product for a couple of reasons
1) It is very affordable and reasonably priced.
2) It filters great...I have a tds meter and tested my water prior to filter; its at about 120 ppm. With filter I lowered ppm to the 50-60 ppm range. This is very good for city tap water. Like others have said it taste great because it taste like nothing.
3) Very easy to install. I hate installing anything and dread the smallest tasks. This took about 5 minutes tops.
4) Replaceable cartridges. I read somebody's review complaining about replaceable filters being too much. Here's the deal. It a filter and a housing, nothing else. The filter does more than the housing so why complain about the price. I would rather buy filters than a new unit because they are CHEAPER and EASY to install, and they restore the unit to original operation condition.
5) Prime Shipping on unit and filters. Awesome.
My wife and kids notice the difference in water quality as well. My two year old knows he wants the filtered water versus regular water as he likes the taste, or lack thereof.
A couple of things I noticed that I accept but do not like:
1) You cannot filter water past 90 degrees F. It ruins the filter. This for me is not a problem but guest and WIVES may ruin a filter or 2 by not paying attention. Argggghhh!
2) Puts a load restriction on water pressure ( less water pressure as it is being filtered . If some of your plumbing is not quality you may notice some backpressure type leaking.
Great product nevertheless, and these are errors with the technology and are inherent in most every water filter so I still give the product 5 stars!
Customer Review: Easily the best - updated: not so great after three months Summary: 4 Stars
After our second Brita on-faucet filter broke, I decided to try another brand. After doing some research, we decided to give Culligan a try based on its Level 3 filter, compact size, and metal fittings. After a month of use, we're very satisfied.
Installation was very easy, since we'd already removed the aerator from our faucet. I feel MUCH more confident in the mounting, though, since the metal fittings sealed very nicely and seem sturdy - unlike Brita or Pur. The unit is also pretty compact, and it has a very handy auto-off function that automatically switches back to unfiltered water when the tap is turned off. Flavor is nice and clean after we let it run for the recommended 10 minutes the first time.
Two drawbacks I've noted, but neither is a deal-breaker:
1) Water flow is fairly slow, but not much slower than the Brita. I can fill a 16-ounce glass in 13 seconds, which isn't terrible, but if I'm filling a pot I usually walk away and do something else while it fills.
2) There's no indicator light to remind you when to replace the filter. I actually really liked that about the Brita, but everything else about this filter is so much better (including the price), that I'll stick with the Culligan. The filter comes with a little sticker to put on your calendar to remind you instead, which I ended up putting on my fridge.
Overall, I'll stick with Culligan from now on. Recommended!
Update: The auto-off button stopped working after two months. This was a great feature to have, so I'm docking a star.
Customer Review: Very Compact & Convenient. Changing filters regularly is important. Summary: 4 Stars
So far, I have purchased 3 of these over the past 16 years or so. The first one lasted the longest (appx 8 years) before a small crack appeared in the plastic on the top of the unit. As the crack grew, so did the water leak. The second and third did the same thing over the remaining years, with #3 lasting the shortest time of all - water is now squirting up from the crack. More water is wasted than comes out the bottom of the filter. Sure seems like the quality/strength of the plastic used in manufacturing is going down hill. I very much like the way it works, however; and will be purchasing just one more to replace this `mini fountain'. After that, it's on to try another brand.
Later follow-up - We've since discovered the true importance of changing the filter more often, and the problem has lessened. I'm hoping that's the logical reason/determining factor with possible causing the filter to clog up and, untimately, putting stress on the top center plastic area that's been cracking. With only 2 of us at home, we've tended to let it go longer than the 'average household' recommendation (and I must admit, we lost track altogether sometimes). We're also only turning the water on about half way (rather than full force) before engaging the filter - and that includes releasing button/filter when we're finished - so as not to have it kick in immediately next time the water is turned on. Yep, old dogs CAN learn new tricks! So, as long as the filters are easily available at a reasonable price, we're sticking with it. Stay tuned!
Customer Review: Doesn't leak! Summary: 5 Stars
My husband and I bought this filter about a month an a half ago to replace our PUR faucet filter. Our PUR started leaking terribly about 15 months after we bought it and after reading some reviews on Amazon, we realized that this was a common problem not only with PUR but also with Brita faucet filters.
We are extremely pleased with the Culligan filter. It's easy to mount, easy to use and it doesn't leak! The part that mounts to your faucet is actually made of metal and overall I would say that the design is sturdier than the plastic PUR. I personally like that fact that when you turn off the tap, the filter 'turns off' meaning that next time you run the tap, it does not go through the filter; you have to pull out the little metal knob on the side to turn your filter on. When you shut off the water flow, the knob pops back in.
The only con to the Culligan over the PUR is that there is no indicator light to let you know that it's time to change your filter. You do get a little sticker to put in your calendar (they recommend changing the filter every 3 months or so) as a reminder. In my opinion, that is a very small inconvenience for a filter that actually works. Some have complained that the water does not taste as good as compared to the water from the PUR filter, and though I agree that it has a different taste, I wouldn't say it's worse only different. We'll see how it's performing in 12 months, but for now I'd have to say this is the best faucet filter we've ever owned. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: The Best Faucet-Mounted Water Filter Summary: 5 Stars
While each of the three national brands of faucet-mounted water filters has its own unique features, the overriding consideration of quality is whether or not the filter actually *stays* attached to the faucet. This Culligan model does, whereas both the Brita and the Pur did not.
I have an externally threaded faucet so it doesn't require an adapter. Nevertheless, I had the same problem with the device falling off that others attributed to the adapters. No matter how tightly I screwed the filter onto the tap or how cautious I was when turning the thing on and off, it always came loose.
There's nothing more annoying than turning on the tap and having the filter blast off, scaring the heck out of me, nearly missing my face and soaking me with spray. This happened several times, most recently with the Brita, which I finally just gave up on and threw in the trash. Then, having read the reviews here on Amazon, I bought the Culligan.
Unlike the Pur and the Brita, which are all plastic, the Culligan has a metal ring that attaches to the faucet. It's easy to screw on and it stays put. And here's the kicker -- it costs *half* the price of the others and its replacement filters are cheaper!
I do wish that Culligan offered its filter in chrome rather than only white, but I can certainly live with the white given Culligan's quality and the price. Plus, it's guaranteed for two years. My advice -- skip all the aggravation with the other brands and buy a Culligan.
