Tools and Hardware Reviews of Cyclops CYC-S6X Thor X Scout 6.5 Million Candle Power Rechargeable Halogen SpotlightCustomer Review: Great Light... but be prepared to be handy Summary: 4 Stars
I did a good bit of research to find a suitable light for night boating: it needed to be bright, reasonably sturdy; run on 12 VDC if necessary, and have good ergonomics; price wasn't a major issue. The Cyclops looked good, but some of the prior reviews mentioned problems with the battery, dead-on-arrival problems, & too heavy. I decided to take a chance.
Pros: The light is really bright; no problem on that account. Despite its low price, it's not "cheap" either with respect to its design concept or its construction, so its function versus form is quite good. The ambiguities with the battery charging noted in earlier reviews seem to have been resolved, since the manual instructions about charging are very easy and not a hassle at all. And regarding weight/bulk -- no problem at all.
Cons: This will be BIG for some people... when I first plugged it into its charger, the little red LED dutifully began to blink, leading me to think something was happening. After the specified 20 hours for complete charge, I unplugged it, flicked on the light, and got NOTHING! Rats. Well, either return it or fix it. If you are handy with simple electronics (& this thing is really simple), a small phillips screw driver and a larger one will remove the front bulb assembly & the internal plastic plate that hides the two batteries. Turned out that one of the slip-on battery lugs was simply not connected to its battery terminal. It was almost as if whomever assembled the unit intended to create a DOA unit! Ever wonder what happens to returned units? (;-) Anyhow, having performed that trivial fix (15 minutes max), everything worked fine. I would give it 5 stars if not for the small amount of time I spent.
BTW: The unit I received was the yellow-cased one; obviously it has been re-designed, and the black-cased one must be version 1.0!
