Tools and Hardware Reviews of DSI Outlet Wireless Remote Wall Outlets, 3 Outlets with 1 Remote

Customer Review: Beware
Summary: 1 Stars

I rarely write reviews but felt compelled to share my experience with this item.

This unit suffered from a remote that stopped clicking after a while and would activate itself by gravity alone. Just setting the unit down resulted in the tiny bit of weight of the button itself depressing the 'activator' inside the unit with no click. I had to balance the unit on its side when setting it on the night stand to keep it from turning on and off by itself when I walked across the floor.

I tried another model of the same type of product. The unit worked for a couple of days, then the lamp attached to it started to cut off after a few minutes. It would turn back on when prompted by the remote only to turn off again a few minutes later. The lamp worked fine when connected directly to the outlet without the unit.

I think the units, although of different names and slight design differences, might have been made by the same mfg. I realize the units may be made by different companies, my point is that the two variations of devices I owned both stopped working after little use. I have no proof of this but I attribute their faultiness to being poorly slapped together over seas.

Again, this is a great idea and was great for a few days but terrible QC rendered them a waste of money in a very short time. Maybe you'll get lucky and get a good one, it could be dumb luck that I just got stuck with a couple of lemons in a row. However, I would advise caveat emptor on this one.

Customer Review: Big Clunky Outlet-Hog
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this product because I thought it would be cheaper than having my outlets re-wired to a switch. When it arrived I looked at the instructions in the box and it stated the product came with a battery. I searched the whole package and did not find one. To make matters worse, it take a special battery (12V 23AP), not your typical AA or AAA. There are no dimension specifications for this product and I was surprised to find out how big they actually are. I measured each receiver to be 5"High x 3"Wide x 2"Deep. They are NOT discreet at all. These outlets have 3 prongs, so they are not reversible, and it was too big to fit in one of my outlets. I tried it in another, and it worked. The only problem was, it covers the outlet below so now I can only use one of them. I knew right away this would not work for me, so I never bothered to get a battery for the remote. The manual on/off button was neat and worked, but I can't give a true opinion on the remote. If there was a smaller compact version of this product, I would be all over it.
Pros
+Neat concept
+Worked Fine
Cons
-Too Big
-Not Reversible

Customer Review: Good remote control, but limited to three channels
Summary: 4 Stars

This remote control system works very well, and the price is very attractive. However, I had a similar system when I lived in Germany, which had two important features that I have not been able to find in the U.S.: First, the German system came as a set of four receivers and a transmitter with four corresponding buttons (similar to this one with three receivers and three buttons), but it was possible to buy additional receivers and transmitters and to assign different channels to them. This way, it was possible - for example - to have separate remote control systems (using different channel ranges) for the lights in the bedroom and in the living room, or to control up to 32 individual receivers with a single remote control (using the four buttons and the channel selector). Second, the German system offered the possibility to add receivers with built-in dimmer functionality. If I find a system with this combination of features in the U.S., I will probably replace the Eforcity system, but aside from its limited functionality I am very happy with the latter.

Customer Review: One word to describe these; Amazing
Summary: 5 Stars

I've found the best use for these products to actually be something other than what they are advertised for. As many people may be unaware of most of the electronics in your home actually drain energy even when turned off, just being plugged in they drain electricity. A couple of months ago I decided to get into the habit of unplugging everything to help save energy but it grew troublesome for some electronics because the plugs were under desks or behind objects. I even said to myself I wish they'd invent a way so I could do this with a remote and voila! They already had!

This works perfectly, with just one remote I can cut the power to 3 electrical outlets. I have a device that measures how many watts devices use and this cuts power 100% so those electronics are no longer draining power and these devices themselves use up so little power it doesn't even register on my device.

Buy these and use them to save money, help lower our dependence on oil and help save the enviornment, how can you possibly lose?!

Customer Review: Great idea....but, only worked for 3 weeks
Summary: 1 Stars

Well, even though it's going to be painful....I'm going to try one more of these.....for 20 bucks, it's not worth the hassle of sending it back, or dealing with the seller. Arrived quickly (as per routine, when dealing with Amazon Prime). But, I'm not sure it's worth >$1/day, not to have to get out of bed to walk over the the light and the "help-me-sleep-white-noise" fan. Easy to identify the problem as a malfunctioning hand-remote....no trauma occurred, just stopped working (LED indicator light still worked...and new battery "trial" made no difference; distance from receivers had no impact; just pooped-out). If the second one is also a lemon, then I'll be back to officially "brutalize" this product. Realistically, the wall-outlet receivers seem to be sturdy/well-made....but the remote feels very cheap/fragile....it's really too bad that they couldn't put a little more effort here, even if they had to raise the price $5-10......if my "second chance" is fruitless....there are some higher-quality options on Amazon, as well.
