Tools and Hardware Reviews of Duke Company Pecan Nut CrackerCustomer Review: Dangerous Design Flaw Summary: 1 Stars
This product lasted less than 10 minutes for me.
The problem is a design flaw that most people will not see until they attempt to crack smaller-sized nuts. I was cracking hickory nuts, which are smallish but not ridiculously so -- and the product failed within the first 20 nuts.
The way you adjust for nut size is a threaded cylinder on the side opposite the handle. You can see it in the picture. It works fine. I do not agree with one reviewer that it is hard to adjust. Not at all -- it takes a few seconds.
The problem is that it needs to be an inch longer.
That threaded cylinder is so short that you almost can't adjust it close enough to the other side to handle hickory nuts. But you can -- just barely. I did. But then it was being held in by just a few threads -- which were not enough to keep it stable under the pressure of actually cracking the nuts. The cylinder slipped and became cross-threaded in its sleeve. I can't budge it now -- it might as well be welded. I will never be able to crack anything *but* a hickory nut.
If it had failed just a little differently, I kind of think that I could have been harmed.
It's a shame because this is a perfectly good design (although it would be nice if the whole device were a little bit bigger, a little bit beefier.) If they had made that cylinder just one inch longer this problem would be impossible. Somebody decided to save 20 cents in the cost. Very foolishly.
The fact that this can happen so easily means that the people who designed and built this device did not bother to test test it as they should have. What other problems did they miss that I don't know about? You know -- nutcrackers develop a lot of force, in close proximity to people's fingers. Fingers are important. Testing your products is important.
After I finish writing this review, I'm going to order a more expensive nutcracker from Lehman's. When it arrives, I will drop this one in the trash and forget it.
The only thing I will keep is a little mental note of the manufacturer's name.
