Tools and Hardware Reviews of PEEL AWAY 7 QUARTCustomer Review: Best Ever Summary: 5 Stars
I've worked in the building trades for 14 years. No, and I do mean NO, stripper works as well or as easily. It's not environmentally toxic, nor will it break your brain/nervous system with toxic fumes. Even hardcore MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities) clients aren't bothered by the smell of Peel Away 6 (see bottom note) so long as I open a window.
I've used it to remove EVERYTHING. Spar varnish, old varnish, long and short oil varnish, polyurethane, waxy-gummy nasty mystery finish, oil paint, water-solvent paint "latex", etc. You name it, this stuff gets it off easily and with no dust, no sanding. Shellac too (although plain alcohol removes shellac pretty well).
I have even used it to strip lead paint in a very safe way (no dust, no chips, no airborne lead) and then carted the lead paint filled glop over to Hazmat for proper processing and disposal.
For best results:
1. Wear gloves, nitrile, latex, whatever. It is caustic, albeit slow acting. The Peel Away will soften your calluses and fingernails, and make your skin raw and painful IF you use your bare hands. That takes several hours of exposure, a little drip quickly wiped off doesn't cause damage. It also leaves a gummy residue on your skin.
2. Don't bother with the paper, it's too stiff and unwieldy. Brush on the Peel Away and cover it with standard plastic wrap. I use the giant roll from Costco.
3. Don't apply it and leave it uncovered, it will dry out too soon to be effective leaving behind a dried gunk that's impossible to remove (except with more Peel Away).
3.5 I like to use a 2 inch throwaway brush to paint / blob it on.
4. Run time tests. Some coatings will be completely liquified in 6 minutes. Some will take 3 hours or more. Some will take two applications. Figure out what your removal time is and stick to it. There's a window of time where the Peel Away is still quite soft and sloppy, and the finish is liquified, suspended in the sloppy Peel Away. THAT'S the perfect time to remove the whole mess. Work in sections and keep an eye on the time.
If you wait too long, the Peel Away dries, or soaks into the wood. Or sometimes, softens the wood making it susceptible to gouges and scratches. The wood softening isn't permanent, the worst that happens is the surface gets a little feathery/napped looking and must be lightly sanded with fine grit paper.
5. When you remove the plastic wrap sometimes big sections of the Peel Away goop stick to it. Have a trash can underneath your working area into which to drop the slippery mess quickly.
6. Scrape off the rest of the goop with a plastic blade, like a Bondo spatula or those ultra cheesy plastic "putty knives", so as not to mar the wood underneath. You can really get into crevices with a plastic blade because it doesn't gouge the wood as easily. Metal knives scratch the softened wood very easily.
7. Use an old toothbrush to scrape out delicate frippery or hard to reach crevices.
Immediately remove the slight remaining residue (it will dry to a hard white haze if you don't) with damp paper towels. Or spritz with water and wipe clean with dry paper towels.
8. Be careful about being sloppy, Peel Away will eat through the paint on walls, and sometimes the walls themselves. It doesn't seem to bother glass or glazed tile. I stripped old marble and it was unharmed, but I was very careful about timing.
One tiny criticism -- If you have a choice, get Peel Away 6, not Peel Away 7. Peel Away 7 is artificially scented. (No idea why, since Peel Away 6 doesn't have a strong or unpleasant odor.) I'm very sensitive to synthetic fragrances, and the "fresh" scent (revolting!) added to Peel Away 7 takes about 3-4 days to air out to a tolerable degree. I can't use Peel Away 7 in my own home, unless I have constant cross ventilation, or I can close off the room with the item in it until it outgasses. Folks who love the smell of Febreeze, or Tide detergent will probably love the artificial smell of Peel Away 7.
Description of PEEL AWAY 7 QUARTThe Peel Away 7 System is an environmentally safe method of removing up to 32 layers of paint in a single application from most surfaces and there are no fumes and no flammable solvents. The Peel Away system includes a paste that is spread or sprayed over the surface to be stripped and then covered with fibrous laminated paper which controls evaporation, and is left on until all of the paint is dissolved for easy collection of the waste. Coverage is 10-12 sq feet per quart. Does not include the Peel Away cloths.
