Customer Review: enjoyable effect but heat leaves something to be desired

I bought this for the looks I recently decided to sign a lease to a house that the lining of the chimney leaves the fireplace unsafe for use. So my landlord stuffed insultation there and made us (me and my girlfriend) sign an agreement not to use it. Well the fireplace sits dismally empty and to both of us decided that needed to change. At least we wanted to make the space look pleasant for company. Mission accomplished we've had several people over and eventually they'd ask where we found this. I mean when we first turned it on I was instinctively afraid to touch the styrofoam logs they glisten as embers would in late night embers ready for roasting marshmellows. The flames look so real to life that I missed the smell of the smoke that set outside waiting when I needed to wait outside for the bus to school I really missed the popping noises the logs made while burning and readjusting naturally.
The bad side as other reviews have said: the remote is on off only. you must set the speed high or low by walking to the unit. Other options on the unit are: heat on, heat off, remote start up or manually thats it. The forces air flow one way not adjustable. I really wish there was a firelike heat setting to this unit. This morning it was 43 degrees outside we've had a few cold nights previously nothing to turn the heat on for but we decided to turn this on to try to cut the chill in our 18ft by 13ft foot living room. We left the heat on the high setting for over an hour. It was still surprisingly quieter than other heaters we've had before. However it was definitely not up to the challenge for the time it took for us to eventually give up we couldve been sweating in a gas heat induced sauna. When we decided its time to start the furnace it was literally seconds before we were comfortable. In fact I laid right next to this fireplace about a foot away from this insert for at least 20 min took a nap; I woke up with a chill so cold that my throat was scratchy I never shivered but I didnt feel anything more than the occasional warm breeze suppressed by that lingering chill. Oh well it works but I won't depend on the heat again by itself for this larger room although the visual effect can still make me think its warmer than it is.
As far as practicality someone might have better luck with it in a smaller room because it does blow out warm heat just not enough for a lasting change in a big room. Maybe its the bar being set so high from the nights next to the fireplace in some of the houses I grew up in I dont know. Although when all the lights are out its mesmerizing to watch this now because the fire effect is always at that of that point of perfection with the glowing red embers and random flames. I really shouldnt ask how it appears so lifelike although I want to know but I feel it is a part of a greater glimpse back into my childhood.
