Tools and Hardware Reviews of Dorcy 41-2098 115 Lumen LED Headlight with 3 AAA Batteries

Customer Review: Very bright, great price.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had many headlights over the years. Incandescent lights burned batteries quickly, so I jumped on the l.e.d. bandwagon and dropped $50 on a .5 watt Princeton Tech when they first came out. Loved the battery life, but the light was not impressive. The 1 watt lights came out and I spent $20 on one of those and loved it even more. Great battery life and pretty decent light. I wore that one out and just purchased this 3 watt light for $25. It showed up promptly and was IMPRESSIVELY bright on full power and even very functional at 1/2 power. The three 'triple-a' power supply keeps it lightweight and also makes it easy (and light) to carry spare batteries, should I even ever need them on trips.

The headband has narrow straps and it is tight when worn over a hat even when adjusted to the max diameter. But most lights have this issue as well. The On/Off/Half Power button works well, but it too, is small. I may crazy-glue a small object on the rubberized button to make it easier to find the 'sweet spot' to activate the power. The tilt feature to shine the light down is a bit stiff and makes a loud click sound as you adjust it, but that isn't really a bad thing. The battery cap and assembly is straightforward and works well. It is sealed with an O-ring to keep it watertight in the rain, but probably not during submersion.

Bottom line; very bright, decent price, and if it lasts me 2-3 years of camping, home use, and salt water boating, I got my money's worth. I'd happily buy another after it died.

Customer Review: Great light for the price
Summary: 5 Stars

I have owned this light for several years. The one I have may be an older model because it doesn't look exactly the same as the one pictured. The light is pretty bright when the batteries are charged. The batteries also last for quite a while. I have used the light about once or twice a week for 2 years, for a few hours each time. I have used it in torrential downpours, dropped it many times and it still works fine. I even cracked a piece off of the battery case inside, it doesn't fit quite right anymore, but still works fine.

What I feel is the most important aspect of this light is the way its setup. The light itself is located farther ahead from your face than most headlamps. For people who don't use headlights all the time (I have 3) this is very important. When using one of the headlamps that is close to your head and there is no plastic border surrounding the light, tilting it down to see what you are doing in front of you makes part of the light shine in your eyes, essentially ruining your night vision. This light is far enough off of your face that even when tilted down it doesn't go in your eyes. I would highly recommend this light for anyone who uses their headlamp a lot and doesn't want to be blinded while using it.

Customer Review: Look no further....THIS IS IT!!!

Bang for the buck, this is where the buck stops. I got this lamp for underground exploration and it is well worth the under $20 price tag! I wasn't sure what to expect from this lamp for the price, I figured it would be decent at best. I'm replacing an old Petzl headlamp.

It really has 145 lumen output as far as I can tell. I compared it to another brand new 150 lumen LED spotlight and it stands up as an equal with just as far a throw. I live in the city in a high loft and shined it on a nearby building with city lights glowing bright all around. This little lamp lit up a huge spot at least 200 ft away on a darkened rooftop! Standing 10ft from a wall, the spot is about 2 1/2 ft wide and the outer ring is about 15ft wide, and is pleasantly warm compared to many bluish LED's.

I don't know how long it will last since I just got it, but for under $20, I don't care, I would buy it again. It does the job, and then some. There are a lot of headlamps out there with 100 or so lumens going for about a dollar a lumen. So this would be a $145 headlamp for $20. You make the choice. (BTW, I always carry other backups for fail-safe protection)

Customer Review: Rugged, easy to use and powerful
Summary: 5 Stars

This is our favorite even though it is not the smallest, lightest brightest or most elegant LED headlamp on the market.
It is bright and has a large and easy to find button switch, which only toggles between 3 settings (hi, low and off). It is very easy to use in the field and we do not have to waste a lot of time trying to find the right setting or simply turning it off when we're switching lights (e.g. to black light).
So far (hundreds of hours of use), they have not given us as problems. The units appear to have good seals against water and dust. The switches and battery holders have not failed or given us any problems.

Cons:
The units are a bit clunky and all of the weight is on the forhead. They tend to become a bit uncomfortable after several hours of use. You might want to look at more expensive headlamps (such as the Fenix 7 Level 225 Lumen LED Headlamp) if you want decent power and battery life with more comfort.

Customer Review: Good Fit - Not Perfect
Summary: 4 Stars

I use a headlamp for just about every home project I do: basement cleaning, attic fixing, laundry, dishes. More light never hurts. My wife and mom make fun of me, but I'm used to that, so no worries.

As you can imagine, in the last month, I've used this little guy quite a bit. One thing I've taken for granted in the headlamps I've owned is the fit. They always seemed a bit uncomfortable after a while. This one I could wear all the time. Hey, that's a great idea!

I'd like the brightest setting to be brighter, and the dimmer setting to be dimmer. They almost seem the same to me. I bought that yellow 180 lumen Dorcy flashlight at the same time, so I could be a little biased here about wanting more light. I always recommend the Energizer Ultimate Lithium AAA's. I think they're worth the money and make the light brighter in the beginning and brighter WAY longer.

For the price I paid here, I'd say it was a great buy. My next headlamp might have a little more "umph" to it though.
