Tools and Hardware Reviews of Dorcy International 41-4299 220-Lumens Rechargeable LED Flashlight with AC and DC Charging AdaptorsCustomer Review: Super bright, versitile and underpriced with home and 'car' chargers. Summary: 5 Stars
This baby is one of the best flashlights I've seen. The first one was bought sight unseen, counting on what I was able to make of it off Amazon.com. I've just bought a second one. You'll appreciate the performance and value of this flashlight for the price.
It's super bright for paths and trails or trying to find that lost pet (or pest) in the neighborhood at night. It is really nice to be free from replacing batteries all the time.
It is a reliable light and doesn't just quit putting out light when I was using it a long time. Others have also noted, as I do, that it operates well past the "estimated 2 hour runtime" that is stated on the packaging. It doesn't need to be brought home for a recharge since it comes with two types of chargers (AC and 12VDC), thus it can be recharged from a car or truck. See Note 1
I have also seen the dimming beam/brown spot (someone else mentioned in their review) appear after about 9 months of use. The packaging states the LED is an "LIFETIME BULB, Never replace!" and sent it back under that implied warranty for correction since it no longer was brighter than my 200 lumen flashlight bulb (that sounds like reason to be replaced to me). See Note 2
Although the warranty is for only one year, the bulb is to last a lifetime, and I like that. The aluminum case feels good in the hands (my wife's too) and feels well made. I'm going to attach a lanyard to it to make it easier to get to. See Note 3
The packaging states the flashlight will take a 3 ft/1 m drop but I am grateful it has survived a 5 ft drop off the breakfast bar unscathed and an un-casual let-go drop-toss (visualize it) on the sidewalk. There is no mention of weather/water proofing but the flashlight is reasonably weatherproofed. I've used it while walking the dogs at night in heavy pouring rain without any problems. See Note 4
BTW: This flashlight looks like the very same one Catherin Willows and Nick Stokes on CSI LV uses. I don't know if I'd use it in crime fighting, but I do get a satisfaction of the solid endcap if I needed to wallop an aggressive something or someone.
If I were the designer of this flashlight I would make a few changes. It's easy being an armchair quarterback in that sense. But would my design changes keep this flashlight affordable like this one is? Oh, one more thing - this is not a kid's toy. It is a tool that has gotten the appreciation and respect of those who have seen it in use.
Note 1: It doesn't mention using it plugged into a charger at the same time, and I don't recommend it since the charger puts out a higher voltage than the charged batteries. A higher voltage is needed to recharge the batteries and you could send too much voltage to the LED and damage it (cooking the LED). There is not an 'LED power cutout while recharging feature' most likely to keep the cost of the complete package low.
Note 2: For returns, since you bought it off Amazon, you'll now need to visit Dorcy's website and complete their return request form on their website.
Note 3: The packaging doesn't state or imply that you have to "drain the batteries" before charging it. It simply states to "Recharge when light becomes dim." It also states to disconnect the charger after the 4 hours it takes to recharge. If you leave the charger on for more time it damages the battery resulting in shortened life. The recharger is the cheaper 'not smart' most likely to kind keep the cost of the complete package low.
Note 4: The packaging doesn't state or imply being weatherproof or that it is suitable for underwater use. Possibly because the flashlight can be used with the charging port cover/bezel open. The weatherproof capabilities would be for the user to observe reasonable precautions when using the light and not definitely not submerge it. The recharger is an invasive type (unlike a Sonicare Tooth Brush) to keep the cost of the complete package low.
