Tools and Hardware Reviews of Duck 00-09140 Indoor 5-Window Shrink Film Roll-On Kit, 62-by-200-InchCustomer Review: I like this kit Summary: 4 Stars
I live in an old house and always apply shrink film to cover my windows. I usually use 3M, mainly because that's all I can find in the stores, but decided this year to order the Duck Roll-On kit from Amazon. I liked the idea of having the pre-taped top edge. I thought it worked very well and was easier to apply than the 3M kits. I've learned from past experience it's always best to follow the manufacturer's instructions, so I carefully cleaned the frame, used the alcohol wipes provided, and warmed the area, where the tape was going to be applied, with a hairdryer. Went on like a dream and I did six windows in a little over an hour with a helper. I did have an issue with the first window. I went outside to see how it looked and thought it was too wrinkly, so I thoroughly heated every inch of the film with the hairdryer and it made it as smooth as glass - and I never noticed it shrunk the window film by about an inch and pulled down the top! Had to patch the top, and for the rest of the windows I worried less about the wrinkles and they look fine. At some point I may experiment with adding more length then super-shrinking to see how it goes.
The complaint about the top tape strip not sticking as well is valid. I think the ease in application makes up for it, and I like to reinforce the top and corners anyway, no matter which product I use. For the corners, I cut narrow strips of thin cardboard (white or brown depending on your frame color) and rolled them up with the excess film, and stapled them down with light duty staples. (you can also buy rolls of cardboard at fabric stores, or buy an outdoor window kit from Duck that includes pre-cut lengths.) For the top, I stuck the 2-sided tape on top of the pre-taped edge which had already been applied to the frame, then I attached cardboard strips to the tape and applied a few staples.
The tape supplied is much stronger than 3M's and it's great to have the alcohol wipes included.
