I read many reviews before deciding to purchase this vacuum. It does a fine job and there are not many vendors that sell ash vacuums. Amazon has the best price and fastest delivery. The vacuum does what it is intended to do. I have used it several times on my new pellet stove because the more you vacuum your stove the better it will perform. I was wondering how to get around vacuuming without picking up the loose pellets that are always there. This is what you can do and it works great. Find a wire mess that is not too fine but yet small enought to not let the pellets through. Take the screen and shape it to fit the back end of the metal rod that is used for picking up the ash. Your can form it and push it in place. When you vacuum the pellets fill the black metal tube, without falling into the vacuum, you can shut it off and tape the metal tube and the pellets will come out and you can put them back into the hopper. Its a great way to save the pellets and not have to fill the vacuum with them, why let them go to waste.Customer Review: Great ash vacuum

I burn about 12 cords of wood each season. This is an excellent product IF USED PROPERLY. I saw some complain about it getting clogged and does not work. Well this is NOT a vacuum up anything in the stove unit. I use it to help control dust and ash in the room. I scoop up the ash and place it in a bucket with a lid that flips up and I place the nozzle inside to help keep the dust and any smoke from getting out. Once I have all the big pieces I fine clean in the stove and around to clean up any mess. There is no other way to do this and my wife is very sensitive to dust and since I started to use the couger she notices the reduced dust in the air and this is a large room and we still had a lot of dust overall but no more. So for those that find an issue with the unit read how to use this properly and this is not a cure all but another tool to add to help keep the fireplace clean. It was worth every penny. I have owned a Cougar ash vacuum for several years now and it has been wonderful. I keep my fireplace burning 24 hours a day when it gets cold out and had to find some way to remove the ashes from a still burning fire.
Yes, if you just stick the nozzle into a bunch of ashes it will clog, but that is because of the fine quality of ash, not the vacuum's fault. Following the instructions to hold the nozzle against the brick and move in small circles works great. I have to wear gloves as the nozzle does get hot but I'm able to keep it cleaned by doing this every morning prior to adding more wood. It takes about 3-4 minutes for me to do this.
If you accidentally pick up embers you just need to make sure they don't get stuck in the hose and have moved to the canister before shutting it off. And make sure to dump before it gets completely full.
I highly recommend this vacuum.

This review is for the Ash-less Cougar Ash Vac. I used it only three times. I bought this to use with a pellet stove. Even new this has little suction compared to shop vacs. I bought it for the special ash filters which did seem to work. If it only had good suction. But shop vacs with a good HEPA filter work just as well in that regard with a lot more suction. I used mine only a few times when I decided to use a shop vac. What a difference. I was going to sell it on ebay when I noticed the inlet mount for the hose was cracked. So I kept the couple of big filter clamps and threw the thing out in the trash. Those were expensive clamps. You can't suck up hot ashes with either vac so the Ash Vac is unnecessary for 3 or 4 times the cost. Plus you can get the shop vac filters cheaply anywhere but the Ash Vac has exclusive expensive filters. Hope this prevents somebody making the same mistake I made.Customer Review: Works as advertised

Works as advertised...seems so simple a concept yet often is not achieved!
Previously utilized a shop vac with the fine dust filter to clean our pellet stove and everytime there would be a fine dust mist in the air...not so with the Cougar. We have used the product for about a month now and it does a great job of cleaning. No ash in the air and quiet operation.
Agree with several other reviewers, the tools should come with the vac and should have a place to store them on the unit. The other not so friendly item is getting the metal tube tool in and out of the coupling when you switch tools...PITA!
Piece of mind knowing if there is a left over ember you are not likely to burn your house down due to your vac catching on fire.
Note, the additional tools, the tube with rubber fitting is specific to pellet stoves and used to clean out the chambers.
