Tools and Hardware Reviews of EcoStrip 2.0 - USB Controlled Power StripCustomer Review: A Truly Automatic Power Vampire Slayer USB Ecostrip 2.0 Summary: 5 Stars
We all know that we should turn off peripherals when we are not using the computer. We hear how much energy could be saved by even a small reduction in consumption due to waste. It isn't always an easy thing to remember when so many things demand our attention. Here is an intelligent power strip that knows when a computer hibernates, such a simple idea it is amazing no one has come up with it before. I certainly wish that I had thought of it. The Ecostrip 2.0 is a quality six outlet power strip with a six foot power cord that plugs into a 120 volt wall outlet and a 15 amp circuit breaker that limits the load to a maximum power of 1875 watts. All six outlets on the strip are controlled by the lighted-when-on switch that is also used to reset the circuit breaker by turning it off then back on after disconnecting the overloading device. So far this is like many familiar power strips.
What sets the Ecostrip 2.0 apart is that there is also a six foot USB cable hard wired to the power strip that plugs into a USB port on a computer, monitor or other powered USB hub. When the power is off at the USB port, five of the six outlets on the power strip are switched off as well as the USB indicator LED light on the Ecostrip 2.0. There is no set-up and no software drivers to load. My computer (a laptop running Vista Home Premium) does not even notice the USB being plugged in. It works as soon as connected just as advertised. Unplug the USB or turn off the computer and the USB indicator light and five outlets go off. Turn the computer on and the indicator light and five outlets come on. What about outlet number six? the one closest to the switch. It stays on unless the circuit breaker/power switch turns it off so that you have one live outlet for the computer to plug into.
Picture this, instead of having the power strip with a jumble of cables where you can reach it - in the way, or crawling under your desk to switch off, or worse yet not bothering, just turn off your computer and all your energy leaching standby peripherals go off too. My laptop running the default power options leaves the USB ports on when it automatically switches to "standby" and turns them off when it goes to "hibernate" or I turn it off. The time delay and even more precise settings can be controlled through the power options menu. It shuts down without any thought or action on my part and comes on if I touch the keyboard, completely automating energy conservation in the office. Printer, monitor, scanner, DSL gateway, it even turns off the desk light whether I remember or not.
The enclosed instructions mention that if a computer has an instant power function called "Wake On USB" it must be disabled for the Ecostrip 2.0 to work correctly. It is possible to make an alternative connection to a computer PS/2 port by using an adapter (not provided). There is a caution that the Ecostrip is not a lightning arrestor and does not provide protection from lightning strikes. The Ecostrip is intended for dry, indoor locations only. There is a one year limited warranty on labor and material defects. A website, [...], provides warranty information, customer service and technical support.
Sometimes one is not enough. By means of a USB cable extension (not included) I have connected another Ecostrip 2.0 to a second circuit across the room. It is safe and easy to hide the low voltage USB cable allowing me to control my entertainment system components power as well. As many circuits as you like can be controlled via a USB hub and an Ecostrip 2.0 for each circuit. At 1875 watts even a small space heater should operate. Other ways of turning a USB port on and off will open many other applications for this energy conserving power strip. For now I expect the Ecostrip that powers my computer peripherals to pay for itself in just a few months. From then on it is money ahead.
