Tools and Hardware Reviews of Eureka Boss Smart-Vac Upright HEPA Vacuum Cleaner, 4870MZ

Customer Review: The Best of the Worst
Summary: 3 Stars

I think my title says it all. This is not in the same class as a Simplicity, Dyson, or Oreck. But then, it's about 1/3 of the price of one of those similarly configured vacuums.

When one evaluates this model, one has to compare it to Hoovers, Bissells, Dirt Devils, etc. Based on my experience with those brands, this vacuum ranks ahead of the class. Frankly, it sucks. But it sucks very well. Better than the Hoover Supremes I've had. As for the weight, well yes, it's heavy but not any moreso than the Hoovers or Bissells I've owned. And besides, the weight is listed in any advertisement or is apparent at time of physical purchase. I'm 6' 200 pounds and in decent shape. The weight is not an issue for me. But for someone half my size, I can see where it would be a pain. If that's the case, you'll need to look at more expensive models (that are lighter) to get the sort of power that this has. In any case, the attachments work as well as any, the cord is just as obtrusive as the others, and the plastic design looks just as attractive and feels just as cheap as Hoovers. It's more powerful than others in it's class. Aside from that, everything is pretty much the same. My only fear is that the belt will break easily, as it is terribly thin and appears very flimsy. But I don't know that for a fact. I'll amend this review if that's the case.

If your budget for a vacuum is $300-500, then by all means buy a Simplicity. If your budget is $150-300, buy a refurbished Simplicity from a reputable dealer. But if you, like me, are satisfied with a 'Chevy' and have no problems replacing it after 5-10 years or so, this might be the best deal for you.

By the way, I paid $118 with free shipping for this. I might have paid $10 more but that would have been my limit with this class of vacuum.

Customer Review: if you are able-bodied and want clean carpet, this is the vac for you!
Summary: 5 Stars

Bought this little beauty after lots of research and browsing. It was a Consumer Reports Best Buy, and I read not only the magazine's reviews, but also amazon's customer reviews (thanks, fellow shoppers!) and Costco's opinions, as well. Bottom line: it's a great vacuum, does what it should, and I hope it will last us a while. I love it and will probably become a Eureka devotee from this point onward.
Yes, it is a heavy vacuum. But, it's very powerful. I will take weight for power any day. What's the point of a vacuum if it can't even suck? It seems self-propelled to me- just flies over my carpeting, and that's on the highest pile setting. The pull-back swipe takes some energy, but it's certainly not overwhelming. I am not a weight lifter or any kind of health buff, and I didn't feel fatigued. Besides, don't you want to burn some calories doing housework? That means you can hop off the treadmill a few minutes early! Bonus!
I love the clear pieces- transparent hose is great for locating clogs, nice to see whether or not your brush has actually stopped spinning before you venture onto the tile. Seemed strange at first, but now I get it. Power Paw is a nice feature as well.
Perhaps I am easily impressed, as my old vac was dying for several months, and there was plenty of dirt to test the Eureka out on right out of the box. (By the way, it was easy to put together- just screwed the handle on and snapped in the parts- even came with 10-count them, 10 bags!!) I could hear it pulling all kinds of stuff out of the carpeting. I like to feel effective when I clean. And was it just an illusion, or was my carpet markedly fluffier afterwards?
Get this vac if you want a powerful sucker and the opportunity to tone your arm muscle. It's worth it.

Customer Review: Excellent for pet hair!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

The worst enemy of my past vacuum cleaners has been the hair from my four cats and two Shelties. Every couple of weeks I could be found on the floor with the vacuum upside down using scissors to cut away the hair that had wrapped itself around the roller. The hair would pack down the pick up bristles, reducing each machines effectiveness. This was the bane of my vacuuming career....

I bought the Smart Vac after reading many reviews and doing my research. I've owned it for six months now and - joy of joys - this vaccum DOES NOT GATHER PET HAIR ON THE ROLLER! The plastic over the roller on my machine is clear, affording me an excellent view of my heart's delight - NO HAIR ON THE ROLLER! Now I know the hair is being picked up and placed properly in the vacuum bag.

The suction on this machine is incredible so watch out if you've used weak machines in the past! I accidently lost a cell phone charger when I just barely picked up the edge of the cord and - PSHWOOOP! - it sucked up the cord and just left the plug with a little copper stub. Although upset about the cord, I was more impressed with the vacuum and glad I finally invested in a piece of machinery that performs it's job admirably. I just had to be more careful when I vacuumed - and I am!

This machine is also much quieter than my it's predecessors. A bonus when you have two dogs who HATE vacuum cleaners. Although they don't adore the machine, they can at least stay in the house without feeling the need to kill the cleaner while I vacuum. Now they usually stay one room away from wherever I'm vacuuming and they are fine. They even find other things to do while I'm cleaning! A relief to me!!!

I would recommend this machine to anyone.

Customer Review: It worked while it lasted
Summary: 2 Stars

I liked this machine UNTIL IT COMPLETELY DIED without explanation after just three months of normal use.

Pros: The Boss Smart-Vac has exceptionally good suction, and it's inexpensive. My carpets were very clean while the vacuum lasted.

Cons: If you plan to use this vacuum for anything but cleaning a plain carpet, then this might not be the machine for you. I found this vacuum much more difficult to use for other cleaning tasks compared to the four other vacuums that I have owned in the same price range. First, it is REALLY heavy, which makes it difficult to use on stairs. People who aren't physically fit probably shouldn't buy this machine; it will give you a serious workout. It's also a real pain to switch back and forth between the carpet and bare floor settings. Furthermore, this vacuum isn't very effective on bare floors; sometimes it just blows the dirt around rather than sucking it up. I often just gave up and used a broom. It was also difficult to switch the suction from the hose to the floor. I had to turn the vacuum completely off first. Finally, it didn't do a very good job of cleaning in corners and along the edge of the wall, and it was impossible to use it for cleaning under a bed.

Although it was often a pain to use, I originally felt that the Boss Smart-Vac was a good vacuum because it effectively removed dirt from the carpet (which is really the main reason why people buy vacuums). But I can't recommend something that breaks so easily. I have another vacuum, so I was using this one to clean only four rooms on the first floor of my home. Even though it's inexpensive, the Boss Smart Vac should have lasted much longer than 3 months.

Customer Review: BOUGHT THIS - LOVED THIS - TRASHED THE DYSON
Summary: 4 Stars

Okay,so my three year old Dyson 18slim was already DOA by the time I recieved this vacuum but WOW - this thing is great. Okay, it's big, it is...and heavy - yeah, so what ... and not so quiet that a baby could sleep while you vacuum (get real) but WOW talk about suction!!! On that note, you better keep the baby a good three feet away from it (and small dogs and your pony tail...not kidding!!!). Yes, the big monster here would be HELL to drag up any stairs (even one stair) but I don't have stairs. Whoopee! It's simple to put together and that's good because I'm an idiot ...ha ha. The settings are easy to understand and wow does it SUCK IT UP! Talk about power! I don't care that it's red like a fresh wound - hey, that's so you'll always remember to put it away, right? Look, if you can get over the fact that it isn't light weight and is probably a curse from the devil for anyone who has stairs or a second floor ~ you'll love this thing. I do! I had a Dyson thinking I was "cool" and really getting the best bang for my buck >>> FOOL! Nope. Trash the expensive models, buy the extra bags and marry a strong man to take it upstairs for you. (wink) Give the baby and small dog to grandma if you can't keep them at least 3 feet from the machine (not kidding) and enjoy your new monster red vacuum!!! The hepa filter is terrific. I rate it a 4 star only because it IS heavy. But I've had compliments on my "toned arms" recently (wink wink)so it's a two-fer! Okay, grandma/grandpa - this might be a little too much PUSH for your penny, but for the younger set / / / get out that checkbook and let'er rip! This one is the one to buy! (No, I don't work for the company!) ~~~ Bye now!
