Tools and Hardware Reviews of Eureka Boss Smart-Vac Upright HEPA Vacuum Cleaner, 4870MZ

Customer Review: Impressed
Summary: 4 Stars

Just got this vacuum and already very impressed. Our other vacuum should have been retired long ago as this one does twice the job the other one did. We had a Dirt Devil Vision and thought it was great, but wow, were we wrong. Eureka has a gem in this vacuum. Just as it's been said, if adjusted to the correct height, it tugs itself forward. It is heavy, but the return you get from this vacuum is well worth the weight. Only one fault with it that I found so far, and that is the storage location of the power paw. When vacuuming and the cord is moving around as you push and pull the vacuum around the house, it gets caught on the paw and pops out of it's holder (not enough a reason for me to be upset or unhappy with it). I'm playing around with the placement of the cord to see if that helps. The paw is impressive as well. One other nice feature I found was that in order to see the belt you normally have to dismantle the vacuum, this one has a window so that isn't necessary. The light is not really effective, but who vacuums in the dark anyway? LOVE the fact that when it's in the upright position, the beater bar stops spinning also love that option to turn the suction to the hose from the floor. VERY nice feature. It seems very sturdy and that it should last quite a while. Searched through hundreds of reviews, several vacuums, and tons of "top ten vacuum" polls, and the lowest I was able to find this vacuum was #5. Almost all of them compared this to the Dyson, some rated it above the Dyson in performance and price. I'm impressed with this machine, our carpets have been looking like crap for a long time and didn't know it until we got this vacuum.

Customer Review: A Great Vacuum Cleaner... Not Perfect, But Great
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a powerful and efficient vacuum. It does require some common sense to use it, maintain it and put it together properly. Idiots should not attempt to use this vacuum. You will only be frustrated. Or, worse, you might suck your cat into the bag.

But, seriously, this vacuum will suck the paint off the walls if you're not careful. As you would expect, suction diminishes as the bag fills and the HEPA filter begins to fill with dust. Not changing the bag and filter often enough could cause the powerful motor to overheat.

If your vacuum overheats and dies, it's your fault, not the vacuum's. Vaccums have to BREATHE. If you're an idiot, write a note and tape it to the vacuum so you don't forget.

The floor switch (disengages the beater bar) DOES work. It helps to lower the handle all the way down before attempting to flip the switch. In fact, that's the only way I can get the switch to work. But, it does work.

The utility hose is clear. That's interesting. But, it is also much too thin, in my opinion. It will likely begin leaking sooner, rather than later, and need replacing. But, it's a small price to pay for the excellent performance. I also find the Boss to be much quieter than my old Eureka. I find it quite tolerable.

Pay attention to what you're doing... keep the powerhead properly adjusted for the surface you're cleaning, service the vacuum properly, and I believe you will be a happy camper. It's not the best vacuum for little old ladies, due to it's bulk and weight, but the average person should do fine with it.

Happy cleaning!

Customer Review: This Vac really sucks (-:
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife and I have been around the block a time or two and, as with many of you, have been through our share of vacuums over the years. I'm here to tell you this one works.
Stay away from the TV "infomercials" plugging no-name vacs and making outlandish claims. Remember the old saying, "if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is". Trust the "trusted" names.
Eureka has been around a long time. We checked Consumer Reports before investing in a new upright vac. They listed 3 as being excellent buys. 2 were Kenmores and the third was the Eureka 4870 series. The letters at the end of the model don't mean much (the MZ has the "power brush", but the 4870 is important. The ratings of all 3 vacs were basically the same, but the Eureka was half the price.
The sucking power is incredible. It's not the quietest unit in the world, but I'll gladly trade that for the job it does. Right after buying this vac, someone (we have many young, devilish grandchildren), put eggshells in my wife's washing machine (front-load). The shells got into the front seal of the washer, as well as all through the dryer before we saw them. I took the crevice attachment of the Eureka and cleaned both machines out completely in the blink of an eye. By the way, I've seen complaints that the new "power brush" doesn't work. We've had no problem with this attachment. In fact, it's been everything Eureka says it is. If you don't want to try it, there are several other versions of the 4870 that offer the traditional brush instead. We're very happy with this unit.

Customer Review: great product, great value
Summary: 5 Stars

The Kirby vacuum we had spent a small fortune on 13 years ago finally went to its great reward and we were faced with replacing it. After doing much research (including the very helpful reviews here at Amazon) we decided on this model. After using it several times, we couldn't be happier. It honestly cleans better than our Kirby ever did -- I can't believe what this thing picks up! We have two kids who are in and out of the house constantly with their friends and a long-haired cat so there is plenty to clean up after. The attachments are stored right on the vacuum so it's very convenient and easy to clean an entire room (blinds, furniture, baseboards, etc.) while you're vacuuming. I don't think I will ever dust again -- I'm using the vacuum for everything and love how clean it is when I'm done. We have a two-story home and we like it so much we bought another one to keep upstairs. At that price, it was worth it. It is no heavier than our Kirby was and I don't feel it's difficult to use at all. We have frieze carpet and it feels soft and brand new every time we vacuum it now -- it really is amazing! The switch to bare floors is a little tricky -- you feel like you're going to break the lever because you have to push pretty hard -- but after you get the hang of it, it works really well. My only complaint is that the hose could be a little longer to reach certain areas (high window framing, long flights of steps, etc.). Save your money and don't buy more expensive models -- this one does everything you need in a vacuum (and more) for an awesome price!

Customer Review: Powerful suction that has its cons...
Summary: 3 Stars

We've used this vacuum for a year or two now. The reviews are right in that it is heavy, but the weight issue seems overstated in some of these reviews. My 9 year old can take it up and down the stairs.

As far as suction goes, it's the most powerful vacuum I've ever owned. It's amazing. If it sucks up a rug, you better turn it off, because you won't win that tug of war if the power is on. Power is what we need in a vacuum, so it's a great vacuum for us.

As far as cons, I'm not impressed how the vacuum is built. Other than the screws and wires, the motor is the only piece of metal that you'll find in this vacuum - including the beater bar and the wheels on the bottom. Thus, you'll find that some parts won't hold up like other vacuums - and the motor has had problems from the beginning. As of today, it stopped working - the "thermal sensor" keeps shutting down the motor - sensing that the motor is too hot. After a couple minutes, it comes back on again, but if you vacuum with it the internal breaker will be tripped again. This makes the vacuum worthless. I cleaned and checked every filter and hose and changed everything out, but it didn't help. Eureka told me to take it to a repair center. Alas, we'll have to buy a new one.

I'm not impressed at the short time it lasted, but it was great while it works. Since it's currently priced at [...], I'd consider this vacuum disposable.

It gets three stars because of its short-lived life, but while it was working I was very happy.
