Tools and Hardware Reviews of Eureka Boss Smart-Vac Upright HEPA Vacuum Cleaner, 4870MZCustomer Review: Maybe the Second Time Around It'll Work Longer Summary: 4 Stars
This is my second 4870; the first one worked great as long as it worked, which wasn't very long. After a little over two years it started smelling and acting like something was seriously wrong which happened to be the case. That 4870GZ is sitting in the garage waiting for me to decide what to do with it. It may be repairable or not but I have decided to retire it.
You may well ask why I would buy another one, well, that's a good question. I've never owned a vacuum before that stopped working after only 2+ years. I hope that this early malfunction was anomalous to that particular machine and not typical of the breed. While it worked, it did a really good job, therefore I've decided to give the maker and the model one more chance, and I hope I'm not sorry; I could not find a pattern of early failures on this model on the web. I also had an investment in bags, filters and belts that I hoped to be able to use. I'll admit that I feel as if I'm rolling the dice but hope for much better results this time.
The 4870MZ has an additional feature which the GZ model didn't have; the small brush attachment for cleaning stairs. Although we don't have stairs we do have some small carpeted spaces that are too narrow for the upright; this attachment does a good job in those areas.
The 4870 has done a very good job on our carpet, and is easily adjusted for bare floors. I was pleased enough to give it one more try; if this one only works for 2+ years I will write the model off as a lost cause. Only time will tell.
Customer Review: Love it! Summary: 5 Stars
(I own an older model - 12 AMP Eureka Bravo-2 The BOSS, which I don't see, so I'm adding my two-cents here.)
I've been using this Eureka vacuum for at least least ten years. The only problem I've encountered is that the machine will no longer allow me to lower the height level. It has been stuck in the medium setting for six months, but it's perfect for the carpet.
I've only had to replace the belt once. I can't remember if it was a difficult process.
The bag is a top-feeder, so this vacuum never loses suction as the bag fills. Changing the bag is a snap - snap off, throw away, snap on a clean bag.
It picks up pet hair with ease. Sometimes the suction hole/hose gets clogged and needs to be cleaned out. I reverse-wrap some masking tape on a long stick and push it through the opening and hose. Whatever is stuck will cling to the sticky tape and pull out easily.
It is lightweight and maneuvers as well as any other vacuum cleaner of his size. Yes, it is noisy, but what worthy vacuum cleaner isn't?
The attachments snap into place quickly. The hose doesn't stay on very well. It constantly slips off the housing.
The power cord is long enough that I don't need an extension cord for my large living room.
It still has enough power to suck up my throw rugs if I'm not careful.
I will buy another Eureka when this one dies, but it might not be for a long, long time.
Customer Review: Works as expected Summary: 4 Stars
This vacuum cleaner replaces my old hoover bagless, canister-style "windtunnel," which I never liked. Seventy-five percent of my cleaning is on carpet anyway, so it seemed like an upright would be the better option for me, and I prefer bags, having spent the last 5 years watching the dust fly when emptying the bagless.
Anyway, the floor/roller component of this eureka picks up well, you can hear the particles being swept up. The motor sounds solid and strong - not loud, but confident. The hose component also has suction to at least rival if not surpass the old windtunnel. The machine required some assembly, which was relatively painless, even though the manual was not entirely clear - I was able to figure it out easily.
On the downside, it's almost all plastic, so I worry about longevity. The mechanism that locks the machine in an upright position, also plastic, does not engender confidence and makes an unpleasant noise when locking and unlocking, as if it is wearing away a little bit with each use, or as if it might break if you aren't too careful. Wheels are also plastic, and they do not feel particularly durable as I roll the machine over a threshold, for example.
Which brings up the other issue, which is weight. I'm a 6'2" and relatively active/athletic, but I found it a bit heavy to maneuver, especially when using the hose component, which is really short.
Bottom line: This machine works well, but I worry about durability.
Customer Review: This vac is BOSS Summary: 5 Stars
I researched for about a month before buying this vacuum. I was looking for a vacuum with a HEPA filter system and that was NOT bagless. I considered buying an ORECK but really wanted to handheld attachments. I decided to buy this Eureka 4870MZ Vacuum after reading all the good reviews about it. I just got it today and couldn't wait to try it out. I had to do some minor assembly but nothing difficult. The people who are writing about the hose not staying on and no place to put the Power Paw attachment must not have read the "quick start" instructions when they pulled it out of the box. It is pretty simple to put together and no problem with the hose falling off and the power paw comes with a clear plastic attachment that clicks into the handle of the vacuum.
I have to tell you that I like this vacuum right away. I LOVE LOVE the hand attachment with the brush! Unbelievable... it made quick work of cleaning a chair that my cat loves and constanting covers with thick grey hair. This would normally take me several minutes to clean with my Dyson's attachment. The power is excellent and it definitely made my carpets pile look more plush again. You want to make sure you adjust the carpet level to the right height. It is easier to do this when the vacuum is running.
It has only been a day but so far I am really glad I bought this vacuum. It is a good value for the price. Yes the plastic parts feel a little cheap but what do you want for $150!!
Customer Review: Great Purchase! Summary: 5 Stars
I just bought this vaccuum last week and after several hours of use I am very pleased with it. I've never used a Dyson so I can't compare the two. However, unless the Dyson miraculously goes around cleaning all by itself while you're at work, I don't know what I'm missing out on with this Eureka.
I spent a couple hours researching vaccuums and reading reviews before purchasing. The 3 biggest criteria that influenced my purchase decision were the ability to do a good job of cleaning BOTH carpet and hardwood floors, suction power, and price.
The 4870 does a great job on my carpeted floors and hardwoods. You can disable the roller brush for when you're using the vaccuum on hard flooring. This is a great feature. As I have a lot of hardwoods I wouldn't have bought a vaccuum without this feature. Reading reviews of other vaccuums, I saw that the exhaust blew out the front and scattered the dust bunnies that you were trying to suck up. I have not had this problem at all with the 4870.
It has great suction power and I like the Power Paw attachment for cleaning my sofa. When the handle is in the upright and locked position the vaccuum's floor brush roller is disabled. This is another nice feature since you don't want the brush running constantly in one spot of your carpet while you're using the handheld hose and attachments.
Finally, I think it's a great value for a small price (I paid $140) and I recommend it!
