Tools and Hardware Reviews of Eureka Boss Smart-Vac Upright HEPA Vacuum Cleaner, 4870MZCustomer Review: Does the job Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased a previous version of the 4870 (dark green) a couple of years ago. The newer models have only minor differences. Note to dads and husbands: think of it as a power tool!
I will echo the other comments on great suction and somewhat heavy weight. This is an excellent combination of power and price, but you may want to think twice if you're a smaller person who would need to carry the cleaner up and down stairs a lot. I have laminate floors so the brush control is mandatory; that feature is hard to find on other models in this price range. So far I've had two years of good service with no problems.
The controls for the brush and the hose suction could be more intuitive but I got used to them quickly.
From other reviews, apparently people have had trouble with the bare floor toggle. In my experience, if you try to set the toggle before you unlock the handle, the toggle will fall back to the carpet setting and the carpet brush will keep turning.... which negates the whole point of the toggle. However, mine works fine IF you set the rotary height adjustment knob to "bare floor" and then use the foot pedal to unlock the handle. At this point you can easily move the toggle from "carpet" to "bare floor" and it will click into place, stopping the brush. Yes, it's more hassle than it needs to be but rapidly becomes second nature, and the cleaner does a grear job on my laminate floors.
Customer Review: Does what it was made for! Summary: 5 Stars
This vacuum was bought to replace a Hoover and so far it has performed much better than the more expensive Hoover. It was very easy to assemble and once we determined how the attachments were supposed to be stored on the back of the machine they are easy to use and restore. The lever on the side of the vacuum which releases it from the upright position works just like it is supposed to. Just push the handle forward while stepping lightly on the release handle and it releases perfect. From reading previous reviews we were concerned about how the brush release switch was going to work for the bare floors feature, but it works fine, except it might be difficult for someone whose hands are not very strong. It would probably be better if the switch had a longer handle to provide a little more leverage. The bag is just the right size and is easier to replace without the mess like with a bagless machine. Switching to the hose and attachment feature is very easy and works great with all attachments. The vacuum for the hose turns off and on very easily with the big yellow handle at the top of the vacuum. It has very good suction does an excellent job of cleaning and is fairly easy to maneuver. We have not had any problems and have not had to deal with Customer Service and hope they are better than Hoover, which are foreign based and almost impossible to deal with or get any satisfaction for a problem.
Customer Review: Nature abhors a vacuum but I like this one Summary: 5 Stars
This machine has not lowered my low density lipo proteins, made my dog appreciate me more, or reduced my carbon footprint. It does inhale dirt, hair, meteorite dust and spilled gum arabic with wonderful alacrity. Some have complained of its noise, but compared to our old Hoover it is virtually mute. It is certainly no noisier than my saxophone practice sessions. It has stylish lines that warrant taking it to any state dinner or soirée, and it's name is sure to inspire conversation. The appellation "Boss" may seem a bit crass at first, and I may have chosen Supervisor, Manager, or Overlord, but upon reflection the name serves it well. It has a Springstein-like sense of freedom while at the same time keeping true to it's working class roots. The head light is useless except for comic relief but I seldom am struck with the urge to clean in the dark anyway. The handle adjusts to different angles easily and the myriad attachments are appended to its body, much in the manner of parasites to a host. It's all there when you need it. More humorous than the light is the so called Power Paw. While I value the utility of this little cleaning head with a rotating brush that does a fine job on upholstery and the like, I feel embarrassed to be using something so named. For the price, features and performance I endure my discomfort and would recommend this little sucker to anyone.
Customer Review: Best vacuum I've ever owned! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been searching for a powerful budget vacuum for quite some time. We used to have a Rainbow, (not a budget vacuum) which I hated from day one. Too heavy, too $$, and disposal of the stinky wet dog hair was gross. After reading many reviews on several different brands, I decided on the Eureka 4870mz. WOW, does this thing work great! It's self propelled, which I didn't even know about until I fired it up, and it took me for a walk, but the best thing is the amazing suction. I have a wood stove, and after cleaning out the ashes, I tend to have ash dust all over everything for 10 feet. This vacuum works great cleaning it up, and doesn't blow it around first, like some of the bagless models do. I purposely looked for a model with a bag, as my experience with a much higher priced Dirt Devil bagless, was less than great. The filter needed to be cleaned after every use, or it didn't work worth beans...and I had a rather small house, without pets at the time.
If I had to pick it apart, I would say it can be a bit heavy, and the foot control can be stiff. The cord is good and long, and I don't mind that it doesn't have auto wind, since they never seem to last anyhow. My power paw works great too.
Overall, this is the best vacuum I've ever owned, and the price makes it an even better deal. I highly recommend the Eureka 4870.
Customer Review: Great inexpensive vacuum! Summary: 4 Stars
This vac' has gotten good reviews in "that major consumers' magazine" as well as many online personal reviews saying it's a cheap POS.
Well, I just bought my 2nd and am happy with it. Had the 1st for 6+ years and the wife recently took it in the divorce. It worked great and never broke a belt or anything else. Some of the controls were a little clunky. Also have two others at a family vacation house I've spent several weeks at, and those also work well and have been reliable.
This one seems to be the best yet. They have upgraded some items. The wheels are either softer plastic or may have a rubber "tire" wrap around them -- it's smoother and quieter on hard surfaces, and rolls better. The controls on this one seem to work a little smoother than the older models. It has ~strong~ suction and works well on carpet and solid surfaces. The little handle molded into the lower part is just right for using it on carpeted stairs. The cord is L O N G.
People have complained it is heavy. Well, mine with just the dusting brush onboard is 19.8 lbs. That's quite reasonable for a full-size upright. I do not drag around all the other attachments I rarely use.
And the price is right. Consider seriously, and do not drop $500 on another vacuum unless you really have a chance to test drive it for a while.
