Tools and Hardware Reviews of Eureka Boss Smart-Vac Upright HEPA Vacuum Cleaner, 4870MZ

Customer Review: Worst vacum ever!
Summary: 1 Stars

I seriously cannot understand how this vacuum got so many good reviews except for the fact that maybe they just got it and haven't had it too long. At first it seemed wonderful but after awhile seemed to lose suction and now (1 year later), won't even pick up a cheerio without a struggle. However, the vibrabeater is so strong that if you don't keep it moving it will rip up or burn your carpet. You constantly have to switch settings when going from carpet to bare floor, which can be a pain when you have hardwood floors and rugs. It is so heavy and difficulty to operate, I have to have a shoe on to get it out of an upright position and forget about locking it in the barefloor setting, my husband has to do that for me. Also the nozel is plastic and has several chips out of it. The bearpaw attachment is so sad, it doesn't fluff the carpet on my steps and a couple of hairs jam it up. There is a spot for all the attachments but as you are going from room to room doing your cleaning they tend to fly off, so I don't know where half of them are. I also highly recommend a self winding cord. I know this is simple but it's such a pain to roll that thing up when you are done or in a hurry. I am going to buy a Kenmore canister vacuum this weekend which is what I had before and as the saying goes "You don't know what you got till it's gone."

Customer Review: Great Deal! Traded in the Dyson for this one!!
Summary: 4 Stars

My wife decided she wanted a Dyson. After reading the reviews I agreed and we bought a Dyson DC14 Animal. To me, the Dyson was cumbersome and the hose attachment system was very awkward. To maintain the peace, I kept quiet. We then purchased a home with a nice solid oak flooring/carpet mix. A week or so later I noticed little scratches on the HW floor. I asked my wife and she said it was from vacuuming. She admitted having (maybe) used the wrong setting on the Dyson floor attachment, but we both feel strongly that a 500 dollar vacuum should NOT scratch your flooring even IF its at the wrong setting. We took the Dyson back for a refund.

Did some online review searches, found that the Eureka 4870 MZ Boss had good reviews and decided to give it a try at 1/3 the price! Glad we did! It is easy to use, has great suction and realistic attachments. Go figure!! A Sears rep agreed that Dysons are over rated. I've seen complaints that the Eureka is heavy. Its only 1/4 pound heavy than the Dyson, but its weighted differently so it has a heavy feeling on the handle (my only complaint). Otherwise happy camper so far. Does great on pet hair too! We will be buying another one for the upstairs from the savings from the Dyson.

Think twice before you spend all that money on a Dyson and buy two Eurekas!

Customer Review: Can't wait until this breaksdown (fully) so I can buy a different vacuum
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this vacuum based on Consumer Reports' good review. I disagree, however. The foot peddle release part broke off after two uses so the unit stays up but falls down easily, and if it falls down on your foot, ouch. This vacuum is very heavy and clunky and it feels awkward when in use. Definitely not good for stairs. It's also hard to push on carpet when it's not on. Other plastic pieces have broke including the tube so now it doesn't stay in it's designated spot. The hose doesn't stay in it's designatd spot either and if it's not getting tangled with the cord, it's dragging on the ground. You also have to apply a lot of pressure to change the lever at the base which allows you to switch between carpet and bare floor. And above all that, it doesn't pick-up well on bare floors. I agree with another reviewer who said this is not a vacuum you would want to buy for grandma - definitely not. I'm a fairly strong, young woman and I have a difficult time with it. It's not for children either and this is a great way for them to get out of doing this chore. I cannot believe all the good reviews and I will think twice next time I consider a Consumer Reports review, i.e., do additional research such as check Amazon's reviews. This is a terrible product and I highly doubt I'll ever buy another Eureka.

Customer Review: Getting Fluffy Clean Carpet and a Workout In One Step
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had my Eureka Boss Smart-Vac for about a month now, and I am still impressed with the job it does. My old vacuum was so ineffective that I filled the bag on my new one by vacuuming once! We have a cat, and it was always so hard to get her hair out of the chair she always sits in. The power paw removed the hair in just one or two swipes. I read many reviews before purchasing this vacuum, and most of them are fairly accurate. My husband and I both agree it IS heavy, but it's not really that hard to maneuver. It really does a very nice job picking up everything and makes the carpet soft and fluffy. The plastic it's made of feels a bit cheap, so I question the long-term durability of the product, but the price was a great value considering how well it performs. It's very quiet running and the HEPA filter makes the air smell really fresh when I'm done vacuuming. My old vacuum's hose used to clog all the time, so I really like how this one has a clear hose so you can see where clogs are. However, I have not experienced any clogs in this vacuum's hose as of yet. (Yes, the power paw attaches to the vacuum. The directions just don't tell you how. It's not hard to figure out. There's a plastic holster for it that clips to the back under the handle.) So far, I'm very happy with this purchase.

Customer Review: Good vacuum cleaner
Summary: 4 Stars

This vacuum cleaner does a great job! It's got great suction and works well on carpet, tile, vinyl and linoleum. Two things I'd change about it: 1. Since the attachments are black and the storage panel in back is black, it's not easy to see where the attachments go. I'd suggest making the storage panel the same color as the front panel (ours is red). 2. The wheels of this vacuum cleaner will not roll over it's own electric cord when one is using it on a hard surface; one must physically life the vaccuum over the cord. If the wheels were made of a slightly softer material, they would be able to get traction over the cord.

This isn't a light machine, but it's manageable for my partner who's in a wheelchair and that's saying something for such a big sucker :-) Frankly, I think the weight of the machine is a good thing and helps keep it stable when using the hose and attachments as well as reducing the sound of the motor somewhat.

So far I've been impressed with the range of suction as well as the power. The machine will 'scoop up' a lot of stuff in a radius of about 6" from the actual head and for anyone with pet hair in their home, this is a real boon. Bags are easy to change and stuff doesn't fall out of 'em during a change.

Overall, a great buy!
