Tools and Hardware Reviews of Eureka Boss Smart-Vac Upright HEPA Vacuum Cleaner, 4870MZ

Customer Review: Dust everywhere!
Summary: 2 Stars

I tried to give this vacuum a chance. I used it for four months. I hated it the entire time. It was hard to maneuver and I kept bumping into things. The worst part for me was throwing the trash away. The debris falls from the top into the chamber on the bottom. No matter how careful I was at removing the canister, there was always dust and debris on top of it. As I removed the canister, dust kept falling down onto the machine and me. I have allergies, which is why I bought this machine, and the dust was killing me. I had to wear one of those face masks to help me out. Then I had to wipe down the machine every single time I emptied it, further stirring up dust. Another thing I didn't like was that if you pull the hose from it's nesting place, you can no longer use the bottom part of the vacuum to clean the carpet. On my Dyson, I can use the hose if the vacuum is in the upright position and the bottom part when I pull it back. This is convenient when I vacuum the rug and put the machine upright and use the hose for corners and base boards. I can't do that with this vacuum. If I have attachments on the hose, I can't put the hose back in it's holder so I can either vacuum or use the the hose but not both. I am returning this thing and will continue to drag my Dyson up and down the stairs.

Customer Review: JUNK JUNK JUNK!!!!!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I wish there was a NO STAR option. We bought our BOSS about 10 months ago for light cleanings between the housekeeper coming out. My wife complained after a week that it kept shutting itself off so I took it apart and cleaned all the filters. I ran it for a few minutes and told her it was fine now - didn't think much of it. A week later she reported the Power Paw stopped working. A week after that she reported the vacuum was shutting itself off again. I cleaned all the filters (again) and gave it back to her. The filters were not dirty, but I cleaned them anyway since it did the trick the last time. She said it was a pain and stopped using the vacuum alltogether - went back to her old stick vacuum. Fast forward several months - we now have a dog and it was time to break out THE BOSS again. This time I took control (convinced my wife was doing something wrong). After apologizing to her for thinking she was wrong, and apologizing again for not returning the vacuum while it was still under warranty I am now on a quest to buy a new vacuum.

I'm glad to read so many positive reviews - let's see how those vacuums hold up after a few months of "light housework". JUNK - very disappointed - very. I guess in some cases you really do get what you pay for.

Customer Review: !!! Awesome Vacuum!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an AWESOME vacuum cleaner and I HATE to vacuum! The vac originally came with a small piece broken off; apparently it was damaged in transit. I e-mailed Amazon and they immediately shipped a replacement that arrived in less than a week. Return of the original vacuum was virtually hassle free.

Having said that, I was amazed by the results when I first used the vacuum. Our carpet is 9 years old and after two dogs and a string of children, the texture of the carpet reminded me of felt. Not much pile left, I thought. UNTIL I used this vacuum. I was amazed; I actually started seeing vacuum tracks again!! The carpet looks and smells better than it has in years. I have never seen such a difference with any vacuum cleaner that we've owned. I usually just went through the motions of vacuuming since I really couldn't see that much difference in the before and after. Now, I just love how much better the carpet looks, smells and feels after I vacuum!

One other note, this vacuum isn't as heavy or big as my old vacuum so I really don't see the size and weight as a problem, contrary to some of the other reviews that I read.

You need to buy this vacuum! I feel like I've discovered the 8th Wonder of the World!

Customer Review: This is our 2nd Eureka Boss
Summary: 5 Stars

This is our second Eureka Boss vacuum. Our first lasted three years and was still working ( we vacuum every day). I wanted to replace it because the handle release had broken and the handle would fall over. Also the belt/roller bar would have some problems. My husband roughed up the bar to give the belt a better grip and that helped. I researched other vacuums, but decided to take another chance on the Eureka. My 1st one was dark teal, this one is the red model. I was hoping they would have made some changes and it looks like they have done something different to the handle release. We are making sure we don't force it and hopefully it will last. Also the wheels are of better quality! I think Eureka is doing a great job, making adjustments and changes. The suction is excellent and that is why I wanted another one. The suction on the hand tools is great too. My kids do a lot of vacuuming and the power paw will be great for stairs. Even though it seems heavy, it really isn't a problem since it pulls itself along. Other vacuums I looked at were about the same weight. The price is great too. Make sure that you get the 4870MZ there are many other 4870 vacs out there with different options. This is exactly what I wanted. Fast shipping too!

Customer Review: Powerful, too heavy yet fragile, vacuum cleaner
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought the Eureka 4870gz Boss Smart Vac just over five years ago. Immediately, I appreciated the strong suction but greatly disliked the heaviness of the machine and how difficult it was to push and carry. I would still dislike it a lot in a one-story home, though just a little less.

Within weeks, the foot release broke for holding the unit upright when not in use. If totally untouched, the vacuum would stay upright, but a heavy step in the room or the slightest touch would send it crashing down. The dents and scuffs in the walls, furniture and floor eventually taught me to lay it down (very unhandy when in the middle of cleaning the house) or move it against heavy furniture to prop it up. I looked into repairing it, but it was too much hassle to return and paying for it locally was too expensive.

Later the on/off switch quit, so I have to unplug it to stop it. With a long cord, that can take a lot longer than I'd like when the phone rings or the corner of a rug or a shoelace gets caught.

The front profile of the vacuum is too high for cleaning under beds or some other furniture my older upright could reach under.

In summary, it has great suction but I hate it.
