Tools and Hardware Reviews of Electrolux Oxygen Canister Vacuum Cleaner, EL6988E

Customer Review: tidbits you might want to know...
Summary: 4 Stars

it might be that i was "power head" deprived for several months till budget allowed, but this puppy has great power! on all 3 carpet heights, the vac all but moves on its own which equates to GREAT pick up even in this high traffic plus animal home!
now for those tidbits: i waited a week to write this so i'd have several uses to base my comments on. don't know exact length of cord, but you should plan on switching outlets often. we live in old Victorian with LR, DR, kitchen & entry on main floor; cord only reached 1/2 way into DR from LR. the "tool caddy" mentioned is in the wand; only holds the dusting brush & crevice tool and the brush has a tendency to fall out - no space for the upholstery brush (which has "hard" rubber fingers instead of brush - it is great on stairs!)or the floor brush which is VERY wide and makes cleaning go quickly. this is important, as in my opinion, while the power head is magic on all carpet heights, it's not good on hard surfaces. although none of the attachments have a male/female connection, they fit securely. the extension on the wand doesn't add a lot of length and, if you apply a tad of pressure, can pop down a notch. knew there wasn't an on/off switch on the wand when i purchased it, but am surprised how much i miss that feature. also, the hose doesn't rotate where it plugs into vac body. there is what i'd call a design flaw that i forsee a possible problem with; on the power head, the cord that provides the power is connected directly over the lever you tap with your foot to lower the wand ~
all that being said, i'm still happy with the vac - is it my dream vac? no, but since drilling holes in plaster for a built in system isn't in the cards, this will do fine. and, don't worry about springing for paid shipping even if you're in a hurry - i went the free route and mine shipped the day after i placed the order and arrived the next day.

Customer Review: Decent vacuum; compact; not made like they used to be
Summary: 3 Stars

I'm rough on vacuums, and picky. This unit is good, but not great.

The good: Compact; reasonably good airflow; reasonably reliable (aside from nits below); on-off switches and cord rewind buttons are easy to get at, but flush with surface of vacuum so it's hard to turn them off and on accidentally. I like the light weight and easy maneuverability of this unit. Bags are easy enough to change. I like the canister style because I vacuum under things a lot, and I stick the bare wand (with or without a dusting attachment) behind and between furniture and walls. I also like to put on the dusting attachment and use the vacuum to suck up cobwebs. Uprights just can't touch this unit's ability to get into tight spots. Unlike some reviewers, I like the pressure-fit attachments (which lack extra buttons or latches to secure them). I just press hard when I put them on.

The bad: Plastic wand is rickety enough that I can feel it flex as I vacuum (yes, I push hard); rug beater chews up the edges and corners of rugs; cheap plastic hose tends to buckle; air leaks at various points, reducing suction; wheels sometimes come off the floor attachment, leading to under-sofa searches :-); cord is a bit short, but not atypical (I just hate plugging and unplugging vacuums).

Overall: What I like about this unit is that it works pretty well for something as light and compact as it is. I think Electrolux can do better, though, with the rug beater, easily bent hose, and rickety wand. A little Japanese-style incremental improvement to this product would go a long way.

If you have extra money, and want something light, maneuverable, and easy to move around - and are careful with the rug beater (esp. if you have carpet with a fringe or tassels) - it's not a bad choice.

Customer Review: Powerful vacuum great for pet hair
Summary: 5 Stars

I also researched this product before buying, looking for a vacuum that would be good for pet hair on both hardwood floors and area rugs. This one was rated best, and was less expensive than some others not so well rated.

I have one of the other (not red in color) Electrolux cannister vac's that I thought was a good vacuum, but just wasn't doing that well now that there are two hairy dogs in the house.

I'm very happy with this vacuum. On bare floors, it draws light weight pet hair into the vacuum from areas around the powerhead (instead of blowing it away.) As other reviews indicated, on rugs or carpet, it is sort of lightly self-propelled. The handle with a large loop to it works well with this feature, making it easy to steer the powerhead. The brush and crevice tool have on board storage. I'm using the powerhead on bare floors as well as rugs.

It is NOT hard to detach the power head/wand from the hose/cannister for storage. (It works like my old Electrolux, so I didn't need need the instructions, but these are very clear, and the pictures are helpful.) Please note: there are gray release buttons on the wand. The step-on pedal is to unlock the wand from the upright position to a free angled position. It doesn't detach anything. I'm afraid that the person who was stepping on this to knock down the vacuum used brute force to disassemble the thing, and it's no wonder the vacuum is in the shop.

There is more plastic and less metal on this vacuum than on the older (not red) Electrolux's. Its also a lot lighter weight, more compact, and easier to carry.

Cons: With the powerhead running, this is not a quiet vacuum. (Dogs will run and hide.) I think this may be the loudest vacuum I've ever had, but it works the best.

Customer Review: Good product. Worst customer service ever. EVER.
Summary: 2 Stars

My oxygen 6988D is one day less than a year old. It has been an excellent appliance. However, tHe carpet attachment stopped working last week work. I called the 800 number in my owners manual and got referred to a local repair shop. They diagnosed the problem as the eletrified wand but told me that I had to call Eletrolux to replace it. That was where the fun began

THe people at the other end of the 800 number in the owners manual completely disavow having anything to do with vacuums, which are not considered "major" applicances. Considering what I paid for this I beg to disagree. They transfer you to another number so you're on th ephone about 10 minutes at this point. The people on the SECOND number tell you they have nothing to do with vacuums. They give you ANOTHER phone number. THIS number was for the US headquarters of Aerus Electrolux and THEY really do have nothing to do with this appliance. However, they were able to give me the phone number of the Electrolux USA facility in Augusta, GA (headquarters?). THEY too only handle "major appliances" which someohow exclude vacuums. And so on. Folks I was on the phone over an hour - inlcuding one "hold" of over twenty minutes when the "supervisor" was "personally connecting " me to the "right" department - had.

So, 65 minutes on the phone, customer service reps are clueless, their supervisors are apparently extremely busy executives as they are not made available. The ignorance and lack of technology (including an inability to stay with you on the phone to connect you to the next number) are genuinely astounding in this day and age. I would not only stay away form this appliance but unfortunately from the entire Electrolux brand.

Folks - call this number 800.896.9756. And lots of luck to you

Customer Review: Not really "Ultra Clean Carpets"
Summary: 2 Stars

"The unique power head system has a separate motor that drives it, giving Oxygen Ultra maximum cleaning performance. Oxygen Ultra has a durable brush roll and long-life belt to extend the life of the vacuum and leave you with deep cleaned carpets."

This is how Electrolux describes the carpet cleaning capabilities of this vacuum cleaner.
Another way to describe it is "Doesn't stop if you are lucky". The main differences between these two statements is that
the latter is correct.

What happens is that you turn on the brush rolls using the controls on the handle. So far, so good. What happens next is
that you dry to clean the carpet, and it works for about .... 5-10 seconds. Then the rolls turn off, and all lamps on the vacuum starts to blink, and all control buttons on the handle cease to function.

After this your only choice is to unplug the vacuum cleaner, plug it back in and go for another 5-10 seconds.

This also happens if you detach the wand. Once detached, the blinking of lamps commence, and you can no longer
control it. Not even shut it off, with less than unplugging it.

It is fairly quite, and gets the job done, but with a lot of frustration.

+ Fairly quite
+ Suction is good

- Carpet brushes do not work for more than 5-10 seconds
- Handle controls stop working when detaching wand, rolls stop working, or just randomly for no apparent reason.
- Trying to get in contact with Elextrolux is harder than booking a trip to North Korea

ps.

Yes, I have checked the bag, the rolls, the wand and everything else that needs checking.
