Tools and Hardware Reviews of Electrolux Oxygen Canister Vacuum Cleaner, EL6988E

Customer Review: Best Vacuum Purchase
Summary: 4 Stars

After years of wasting my money and time buying, using, attempting to repair and finally discarding both upright and canister vacuums, I had little real hope the Electrolux Oxygen would work. Although this vacuum won kudos from most of the consumer websites I visited, years of disappointment left me dubious.
After a year of ownership, describing me as pleasantly surprised would be a real understatement. This little workhorse is light, easy to maneuver, and really sucks (hair, dust, dirt, almonds, etc.) I have two dogs, three cats, and a teenager, all dedicated to making as much of a mess as possible, but the Electrolux easily removes it from my area carpets, wood, linoleum and tile floors, furniture, blinds, ceiling fans, and the dogs (who now loved to be vacuumed).
There are only two improvements I'd suggest to the manufacturer:
1. Make the power cord longer and looser for extension. (When I forget to pull the cord all the way out, I sometimes move the vacuum too far away and cause the cord to yank from the wall socket.)
2. Make the vacuum bags easier to obtain. (I often have difficulty finding them in stock - they must be popular.)

Customer Review: Light, compact , power and a washable HEPA filter
Summary: 5 Stars

After much research and reading these reviews, I decided to order the EL6988A to replace an old Kenmore canister. I found a much better price than the standard prices listed on most websites so research is important. My new vacuum arrived in one day with no shipping cost. To use a format used by another user which I found quite helpful:

Pro's
Very eary to set up - took less than 5 minutes. Bag and filter already in machine
Light weight and easy to carry
Good power and suction control right at the handle
Washable HEPA filter (they say good for 2 - 3 years)
Well rated for control of dust, pollen and other irritants
Large floor attachment (along with other attachments)

Con's
Small bag - but as someone said the cost is around $1.00 per bag which is not too bad
Attachments do not fit inside the machine (this is obviously due to the compact size of the vacuum which makes it light). A little inconvenient if you use attachments all the time.

Overall, it is a very good value with good features when compared to the prices for some of the other higher-end vacuums.

Customer Review: CR "Top Pick"
Summary: 4 Stars

The Electrolux EL 6988D Canister Vacuum was one of Consumer Reports top picks. (It was actually number 2 on the list). #1 was a Kenmore, which we refused to purchase as our last 3 Kenmore vacuums have essentially broken down within 3-4 year time frame. I was very tempted to buy the Dyson Animal, but it didn't "score" as high with CR.

So far, it is working well. It is lightweight, easy to carry around. Works well on carpets and furniture. Ok on our hardwood floors. (Better off using the attachment for these, which unfortunately doesn't clip onto the vacuum anywhere-- has to be stored separately.)

Minor Negatives:
-No dirt sensor.
-The power cord is shorter than expected.
-The swivel mechanism takes some energy to overcome to get the vacuum to move in the direction you want. This also makes it a little difficult to do the stairs.

So far, so good. We'll see how it pans out... our friends have the Dyson and describe their feelings of "love at first sight" with it. I don't know that I have the same feelings of love for the Electrolux but we're giving it a chance.

Customer Review: Great vacuum with a small dust bag
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this vacuum because it was rated the best by Consumer Reports. (Immediately after I purchased it the next issue of Consumer Reports had a new review that rated a Kenmore vacuum equal to the Electrolux.) I was most concerned about having a vacuum that would pick up cat hair. My cat has especially soft down-like fur that sticks to everything. My previous vacuums had never cost more than about $70. But after getting this cat, my old vacuum would not pick up her fur. I had to get down and scrape it off the carpet with a shower squeegy. The electrolux has changed my life. It is amazing to see my carpets so free of cat hair. It is also nice to have the dusting brush and the crevice tool attached to the handle so it is easy to switch tools. The suction is really powerful even with the attachments. The one drawback is the small size of the dust bag. My previous vacuum had a much larger bag and also because it didn't pick up as much dirt and hair I could vacuum my house many times before needing to replace the bag. It is nice, however, to have the indicator light to let you know that the bag is full.

Customer Review: How is it possible that this vacuum gets such good reviews???
Summary: 2 Stars

Like many of the other reviewers, I also spent a lot of time choosing this vacuum. I chose it primarily because of its Consumer Reports rating and reviews from other owners. I also thought paying so much for a vacuum would mean it was a quality product. HUGE MISTAKE!
PROS: Decent suction and cleaning on regular carpet (but not as amazing as I was lead to believe). Lightweight. Nice looking.
CONS: Does NOT clean well on hard surfaces or very low pile carpet. Picks up dust and pet hair fairly well, but doesn't easily pick up "heavier" dirt which gets tracked in by kids and pets. Power brushroll strongly propells itself forward which seems cool at first, but you have to use strength to pull it back in the typical back and forth vacuuming motion which gets pretty tiring after any length of time and makes it difficult to maneuver in tight spaces. Very flimsy plastic construction. And switching between brushroll and floor tool for hard and carpeted surfaces is a real pain if you have multiple transistions between rooms.
I would not recommend this vacuum to anyone, especially not for the price.
