We live in a 3 bedroom ranch (a bit under 3000 sq. ft.) in the mountains of western NC south of Asheville. This area often has winter power interruptions. We considered installing a generator but figured the cost would be pretty high as we have a heat pump & would need a lot of KW capacity. We did not want to live in luxury during power problems, just be relatively comfortable.
I bought the 30,000 BTU natural gas model & installed it in a central location in the living area. It is on a wall bordering the kitchen, eating area, family room and dining room. I got it installed in early February 2010. About 5 days later we got a huge ice storm & lost power for 4 days. The outside temps hovered around 30-32 the whole time. The thermostat on our blue flame heater was set at 3.5 (the thermostat can be set from 1 to 5.) At this setting it easily maintained a temp of 70 degrees in the living area. The bedrooms in the other end of the house went down to 63 which was still quite livable. As noted in some other reviews for heaters like this, the thermostat is not actually calibrated for a specific temperature - it is more of a burner regulator. However, I did not feel this was a drawback. I think the unit worked great. Including the cost of about 50 feet of black pipe we had a livable house for about $400. What a bargain! Being ventless, it was easy to install. We did not notice any odor. Being a coward at heart I added a battery powered carbon monoxide alarm.
Northline Express does not stock these units. They are drop-shipped from the manufacturer. We had a slight delay as the unit was back ordered but still had it within 10 days. There is a glass panel in front of the burner. It arrived in pieces. I contacted NorthLine. They called the manufacturer, got an estimated delivery and called me back within 30 minutes. I had the replacement glass in a week at no charge. For other people considering ways to live in areas prone to power interruptions - we had heat using our blue flame heater, hot water from a Bosch tankless water heater, light & cooking capability from a Coleman propane lantern & cookstove. Oh, and a Philips portable DVD player that I could charge in the car completed our survival package. Except for food we could easily live like that for a month!
Note added 3/4/10 - We used the unit for the 4 day power failure plus intermittently for the rest of the month to take some of the load off our heat pump during frequent temps in the teens. Got the gas bill & it was up about $29 for the month. Unit appears to be fairly cheap to run too.
