Customer Review: OK if you like loud fan noise

I read a lot of reviews on humidifies before purchasing this one. The Essicks are the only ones with fan speeds greater than 3 meaning you can throttle it down to more tolerable sound levels. I have a house with wood floors using forced hot air heat with a coal stove so things get pretty dry. It does work but not nearly as much as I think it should. It has a 9 speed fan that I have a hard time listening to past speed 4. At speed 4 it moves the humidity from 23% to 29% running all night. I believe to really make an impact you would have to run it at the 9 speed. If you don't mind listening to a turbo-prop airplane engine then you might not mind this. And please, don't equate the fan of humidifier with a window fan. Window fans are generally larger and not encased in a box to magnify the sound.
It is designed OK but it is just mostly plastic so it is over-priced for what you get. I am disappointed in the performance but I do not think I had many options outside of a whole house steam unit which run $1,000 to $1,500 and use anywhere from $50-$100 per month in electricity. The smaller steam units are only made for individual rooms not a large room situation. I also keep a pot of water on the coal stove all the time.
