Tools and Hardware Reviews of Estwing E24A Sportsman's Hatchet Metal Handle

Customer Review: Finally replaced my first
Summary: 5 Stars

My grandfather gave me an estwing hatchet when I was twelve that he had bought as a young man. It was not the leather handle instead it had a checkered rubber/plastic handle. It was not the camp axe though as it has the same dimensions as the sportsman. anyways i had that axe for about twelve years and used it all the time it never failed even once. It was much more comfortable than any wood handled i was ever burdened to use. It was stolen by my grandmother to use at her house and i never got it back. instead of demanding it i bit the nail and bought this one with the leather handle. i have used it for about a year. It is every bit as tough and effective. I love the sheath as i do a lot of hiking and was toting the old one in my belt unprotected (yeah i know pretty stupid). I have a old scarade western hunting knife from a garage sale, pocket saw, para cord, fire stater, and this hatchet in my car at all times. This is a must in the hunting camp.

Summary: 5 Stars

This camp axe is pretty awesome... the axe itself is made in the U.S. and the sheath is made in Haiti. The weight and balance of the axe make quick work of pretty much anything you want to cut without wearing you out. It may weigh your pack down a little bit more than a cheaper axe but its definately worth it. The leather wrapped handle is a work of art and the whole product is well constructed to last. You can definately double this as a hammer to drive stakes for your tent or anything else. The blade comes out decently sharp; more than sharp enough to cut through wood with ease. If your anything like me though your going to want to make this sucker as sharp as you can so do yourself a favor and buy a sharpening stone or something of the like. I will be taking this axe with me everywhere I go; kudos to the designer.

Customer Review: Estwing E24A Sportsmans Hatchet Metal Handle
Summary: 5 Stars

When I saw this hatchet I thought that looks like the same quality as my old Case fixed blade hunting knife. I ordered it and sure enough it is the same kind of quality workmanship as Case. The handle and blade are one piece and the handle is leather wrapped. I have had the Case knife for approximately forty plus years and it still is a great hunting knife. This hatchet is very well made and works great for chopping small stuff. It comes with a nice snap on leather sheath for the blade. It could be used for tree chopping but I would recommend an axe for that large of a project. If you like the axe be sure to get Ka-Bar Leather Handled Marine Hunter Knife.

Customer Review: Time to wreak havok upon the land
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this axe. I wanted a small utility axe for camping and other activities and am very happy with the quality. If you are reading this review then obviously the look of this axe caught your eye. It's a beautiful and of course that was the first thing that grabbed my attention when I was searching for a good hatchet. I was even more pleased when I read the reviews that others have left here. Made in the USA. You can't go wrong with this purchase.

The axe comes with the Estwing product sticker and a warning label on the opposite side. I chose to remove the labels myself. This took less than five minutes to do. The stickers leave behind a residue which is easily removed by applying some lighter fluid and rubbing away with a cloth or paper towel.

Customer Review: Factory second....third?
Summary: 3 Stars

I was not even looking for another hatchet until I saw the Estwing Sportsman's Hatchet being manufactured on The Science Channel program, "How It's Made". Now that looked like a work of art. Checked the reviews on Amazon prior to ordering so the burrs on the blade edge were not a big surprise. That's easily fixed. What was not so easily fixed was the large burr on the handle butt plate located just so that it was very annoying. I fixed that with some work with a Dremel tool. What I cannot fix are the bumps and grains under the finish on the handle. One reviewer remarked that the hatchet was to nice to toss in the toolbox. My forty year old hatchet will get used more than this one. Or possibly my expectations were to high....no, poor quality control.
