I have an old copy of this and its pretty sharp with good metal, but the problem I have is the handle. It got wet and just fell apart (it looks like wood in the pic, but its laminated leather and dry rotted). I called Estwing and they said it happens but there was nothing they can do. I figure a camp axe should be more durable than that. Now my beautiful hatchet has tape for a handle. No one else has reported this here, but they know of the problem at Estwing and don't have a solution. I would recommend getting it with the rubber handle if you think it may ever get wet (which I did with the longer handle), but if you want something to look pretty on the hearth to split kindling this is the ticket.Customer Review: Outstanding Quality! I do a lot of hunting and also trimming limbs off of firewood. Estwing makes outstanding products...the best! This hatchet is worth every penny. So solid and balanced. It just feels right. Not only is the steel outstanding quality and holds an edge very well, but the pressed leather handle is extremely comfortable and exquisite looking. I am proud to own this American Made product. Best hatchet on the market. It will last a lifetime...something you can pass down to your children. Comes with a beautifully crafted, QUALITY leather sheath as well. I received this in the mail today as a gift for my husband who is an avid outdoorsman. He broke off the head of his hatchet this last summer while camping so I knew I wanted something durable yet nice looking. He likes nice looking tools, and really, it's worth the price. I expect imperfections on a tool like this, so they didn't bother me. He'll be using it to chop wood, it certainly won't stay shiny and pretty for long anyway. The handle is attractive and not abbrasive. The blade needs to be sharpened, but that's a small price to pay for such a fine tool. I hope it chops as nicely as it looks.Customer Review: PERFECT!

You won't encounter a loose head because the handle and head are forged together, both made of stainless steal!
The handle is comfortable via it's leather cover. It is a hatchet, it's not meant for large trees but it does good on small to medium sized ones! It comes standard with a leather cover to strap on when not in use so you don't get cut and so your bag won't get ripped while you are carrying it. It also comes with a flat surface on the bottom, though i wouldn't reccomend using it for safety issues, you don't want to end up getting cut.

Here is the BOTTOM LINE! I would highly recommend this hatchet to others.
I bought this hatchet to keep in my truck as I do a fair amount of camping and hiking. It came sharp, and it holds an edge nicely. One big plus is that the head will never come loose and the handle shouldn't break while using it. I am sure that other outdoorsmen and women will tell you that nothing is more upsetting than when a handle breaks in the middle of the job. I don't baby this hatchet at all and it really is a workhorse. I knew that I could count on Estwing to make a quality hatchet!
