Tools and Hardware Reviews of Estwing E24A Sportsman's Hatchet Metal HandleCustomer Review: Happy camper Summary: 5 Stars
If you are a woodworker, or anyone else accustom to receiving flawless tools, you may be slightly disappointed with this hatchet. The tool arrived sharp, but with a few imperfections in the cutting edge. However, 10 minutes of honing easily corrected the problem. The hatchet is well balanced, and cuts very well. The polished blade, leather handle, and decorated sheath make the Estwing hatchet a very handsome tool. I brought it on a camping trip a few weeks ago, and my fellow campers were very impressed with both its appearance and performance.
Customer Review: Not quite worth the price Summary: 3 Stars
Had a stump in the yard to work on, so I compared side-by-side with a standard $16 Craftsman camp axe. Prepared both blades the same way, to the same initial sharpness. Estwing was almost negliibly lighter, looks nicer, sleeker steel handle, and has a nicer leather case. The other has a plastic clip to put over the blade, wood handle, feels more comfortable in my hand, has better balance, chopped better, was easier to handle, and retained its sharpness better. Neither was bad, but unless a few ounces matter, I know which I'd take with me.
Customer Review: Lifetime Buy Summary: 5 Stars
I am 64, and am still using the Estwing hatchet that I used in the Boy Scouts in late 1950s-early 1960s. I don't camp much anymore, but when I do, it goes along. Unfortunately, the leather sheath is long since gone, so I have to be careful using it for a hammer. It has numerous uses around the house for making wedges, splitting small pieces, and for cutting kindling. There is not a better hatchet. It will be an heirloom for grandchildren, for me and for you, before it breaks. By that standard, it's the best value one could possibly find.
Customer Review: Great, light hatchet Summary: 5 Stars
This hatchet works great, feels great in your hand and is very sharp. If you plan to own a hatchet that you will take reasonably good care of, this is the hatchet for you. With the handle construction being as beautiful and comfortable as it is I would be reluctant to throw it in the bottom of a tool box. Mine hasn't failed by any means but just looks too delicate for a rough, back of the pickup kind of life.
I own several Estwing striking tools and have had great performance from every one of them.
Customer Review: Awesome hand held personal safety weapon! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently bought this axe and I have to admit, I LOVE IT. I recommend sharpenning the axe prior to use, the blade is fairly dull from the factory. Additionally, I personally like to grease my axe prior to use as to avoid skull fragments from sticking to the blade. The axe feels great because of the excellent leather grip. In addition to that, the weight is perfect for striking in close quarter combat or it can also be used as an artillary weapon for hitting targets from ten feet and beyond.
