Tools and Hardware Reviews of Eureka LightSpeed Upright Vacuum, Bagless, 4700D

Customer Review: Stopped working after less than a year of light use!
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this vacuum in July of 2006 it died in June of 2007. I'm pretty inconsistent with my vacuuming, so I used it MAYBE 3 or 4 times (that's pretty bad in a year, I know, but I hated using the thing).

Every time I tried to empty the dust canister it was a mess! I tried every method I could think of, but the dust went everywhere. The filter was impossible to clean, even with light use. This was my first bagless and I will never use one again. Perhaps there are good bagless vacs out there, but this one is terrible.

The design was also very cheap (but, for this price I suppose that is to be expected). The cord was not retractable and hard to store. I had to hold the cord way up while vacuuming so I wouldn't run over it and it took forever to wrap it up after use. Also, the hose that sends the dirt to the canister kept coming out. I would be in the middle of vacuuming and it would just pop out and spew dirt everywhere. No wonder I hate vacuuming! I didn't expect the world for this price, but I expected it to clean and not just spit dust.

Anyway, the vacuum just stopped turning on in June. I had it for less than a year when it died. I was in the middle of using it, and it just stopped working. I was actually happy to see it go. I would not recommend this vacuum. I would have dealt with some of the bad features (like the cord) if it weren't so messy.

Pros
Price/Headlight/Good suction when it worked

Cons
Canister impossible to empty without a mess./Cord is clumsy/Hose kept coming out/Stopped working after less than a year of very light use.

Customer Review: A Good Machine...
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this vacuum strictly for the basement(where our Home Theatre is set up). It was a pain in the *ss carrying our canister up and down all the time, so I happened upon this cleaner on sale at Home Depot for a mere $70.00... I was initially skeptical at first, I mean a $70 vacuum? However, I purchased it anyway, knowing that I would be able to return it if I wasn't happy. The setup and assembly was fairly quick. The instructions were easy to follow and featured step-by-step illustrations. When I had everything ready to go, I decided to give it a "test run", and I was impressed. I was amazed at the junk our Sears Canister was leaving behind, as I watched the cat hair and dust swirling around in the collection bin. My only complaint-and this is common with bagless vacs in general-is that you MUST clean the filter off after every use, otherwise they tend to plug up and overheat the motor. This is especially true if you have multiple pets, or longhaired cats. In conclusion, this is a good machine. Strong suction too. The attachments include an extension wand for above floor cleaning, crevice tool, and dusting brush. The dustbin simply snaps off in a jiffy, and the filter is washable/replaceable. This is what I like to refer to as a "second vac", when you simply want a machine on another level in your home, without having to lug your main vacuum all over the place. I've owned it for about 5 months now, and so far, no complaints. Just keep it clean and you'll be set. Also, pay no attention to that one review below. This is obviously referring to a totally separate model. I'm happy.

Customer Review: Fragile Parts, Weak Warranty, Customer Service OK
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this product for my small, carpeted apartment back in June. The first time, I used it, the vacuum worked well and I temporarily felt that I'd found a real bargain. The second time I used it, a week later, the vacuum began to emit a burning smell, like rubber being heated. I shut down the machine and lifted the brush cover to see that the belt had snapped. Since the rubber belts are not under warranty, I had to order them from the factory warehouse. I decided to get two, just in case.

Once those belts arrived, I replaced the old one and tested the new band. Again, the burning smell. I opened the brush cover, and pulled out the brush, which was hot to the touch. The black plastic brush had begun to melt and was bent at one end. Because the brush is not covered under warranty either, I had to pay $15 + tax for a new one. The customer service rep waved the handling fee, but I still have to wait at least a week for a new one.

I'm always busy, so taking the time to replace parts has been a huge hassle. Luckily, I always keep a clean space, so not having a vacuum cleaner since July hasn't been a problem.

The main issue here is that the company has a know issue with brushes that jam regularly and with little coaxing.

If the new brush doesn't work out, I plan on spending much more on a higher priced product from a different company. Something without cheap parts. Total cost for this product has been between $90-$100 and I've only been able to vacuum once.

Customer Review: A Great Value
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this vacuum cleaner online about a week ago and just got it delivered. I did not know I had some assembly to do. It comes in a few parts--less than a dozen, and there are about six or seven screws that have to be secured during assembly. But this is easy, and I had the machine assembled in 20 minutes or so.

It is very lightweight but as powerful as the most expensive vacuum cleaners. It really sucks powerfully, and is easy to move around--a big virtue for a vacuum cleaner. I think if Microsoft made it, it would be the only product of theirs that didn't suck, but fortunately it is made by Eureka. The whole thing is plastic. I turned it on and cleaned up the rug in my family room. It got up far more dust than I expected for such a short sweep. The container for the dust is large enough so it can clean more than one room before it needs emptying. I did notice that the plastic dust container had developed a crack near its top (on the first use, no less), however I don't think it is serious because I can apply some crazy glue to it, and if worse comes to worst, I can bandage the dust bin with duct tape. Perhaps the dust bin should be engineered more solidly. But that is the only minus for this machine. It is a simple, unadorned, rudimentary, basic vacuum cleaner at a very reasonable price, and it does what it is supposed to do quite well. Now, we shall see how long it lasts. I would recommend this machine to people who seek value for their money.

Customer Review: Great Vacuum, Great Price? Eureka!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this today at Lowe's for $59 and would have ordered it here, but I needed it now. My old Dirt Devil wasn't even picking up the dust bunnies anymore after 3 years. This was actually my third choice of what was available at the store since they were out of my first two selections. I happened upon an great accident. I was just looking for something to pick up "the big stuff" until I could convince my hubby to buy a Dyson. Granted, I don't own a Dyson and can't compare apples to oranges, BUT...regardless of how cheap it was, it does an AMAZING job. We have two indoor cats (one longhair, one short) and a small crawling child, so it is imperative that the floors be clean.

It took maybe 10 minutes and screwdriver to get it together. Once turned on, I was surprised at how light it was and it was "hugging" the carpet. Our living room and kitchen are an open floor plan, so there's tile in the kitchen and carpet in the living room and the automatic height adjust transitions from one to the other with equal performance. Before I ran it, I thought the house was pretty clean anyway. Based on the stuff I was getting in the canister from the living room, I did the whole house. It took a couple of times of emptying the can, but it does such a great job. I'm truly blown away and may not have to get the Dyson for quite a while. The mother in law is coming to see the grandbaby this weekend and I'm confident that the floor are clean enough for her.
