Tools and Hardware Reviews of Factory Reconditioned Expand-It ZR15518 Edger Attachment For String TrimmersCustomer Review: Number Two, Right Behind My Lawn Mower Summary: 5 Stars
This attachment is the second most useful tool in grooming my yard. And so well priced when reconditioned!
Like some reviews said, I agree that the first trip is painful. But when used regularly, this tool makes the edge look great! I've even taken it to other places in the yard such as flower beds to re-establish the border, and later to "dig-in" for 3" composite edging.
There is an adjustment setting that allows you to move the blade deeper from the guide bar, but it really doesn't doo much. For me, it's either all the way up or all the way down. That is, 1.5" or just even. The guide bar requires you to place it on the left of the edge, so the blade cuts to the right. The only place the is an issue for me is on one side of the driveway where it comes right to the house. With that in mind, it's pretty simple to figure out a "one-way" path for your yard.
This reconditioned item came with a hanging cap that covers the open end when not on the weedeater/trimmer. This specific one has a loop on it that also allows you to hang it, and a hole for the detent and ball to fit in properly. I can't find them anywhere else and the other attachments I've purchased simply come with rubberized caps that are easy to lose. If you get one of those caps, hold on to it! It's gold!
For as little as this cost, it has done an amazing amount of making my yard look good! And now it's so easy.
Customer Review: Worth the money Summary: 5 Stars
This seems like it is made well enough out of the box. I looked it over feels solid, i attached it - fired up my toro. As soon as i put it on the ground the wheel fell off lol !!!! Its a push on nut so i put it back on will replace it with a nut and washer later.
OK...to the edging the blade spins forward - some reason i thought it was gonna spin back wards.. anyway it was a bit hard to get used to but all in all it did a good job. The forward rotation gets it dug in and one you control it right there is minimal hitting of the sidewalk. And i must say it was a bit wider of an edge than i imagined but i refined my technique and it was fine. i went to go do the front yard and after i was done it looked excellent.
the problem i ran into was my toro engages the shaft only after a certain rmp. its not a direct drive - which is great for trimming. It hampered my efforts a bit here as i had to keep the speed way up and move it conservatively along. Noting this was the first time so the edges were built up - causing extra work.
Ok this thing is $70 at home depot and i got it for $34 shipped !! GREAT DEAL !!
i like poulan and the poulan model but its $43.25 + $9.00 shipping and the shaft looked funny - i will have to look at it next time it the store.
this models design aims down a bit and is decent could be bent down farther in my opinion. over all a good buy .
Customer Review: A good worker right out of the box Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this edger as my first attachment for the Troy-Bilt TB70SS 2-cycle string trimmer I purchased locally last summer. Troy-Bilt 31cc 2-Cycle Gas Powered Straight Shaft String Trimmer With SpeedLock #TB70SS Having read the reviews here and recognizing that some have had trouble with the "universal" nature of the Expand-It attachments on various machines, I was inclined to be skeptical.
I need not have worried. The attachment arrived in good shape, and appeared to be in never-used condition. The only indication that it is not new is the "RECON" mark heat-stamped into the plastic near the curb guard. The attachment mated perfectly with my power unit, and off I went.
It took about 20 feet of sidewalk before I got the hang of edging with this attachment; following that, the job went fast. Homelite says that light contact with the sidewalk or curb wlll not damage the blade. Good thing, because on this first cut of a never-edged sidewalk the sparks were occasionally flying! Now that I can see the edge I anticipate future jobs will be easier.
This appears to be a sturdy, well-built tool. Buying factory-reconditioned is a little like eating pot-luck, but the total $40 I paid, including shipping, is about two-thirds the lowest price I found for new attachments.
Customer Review: Nothing wrong with this... Summary: 5 Stars
unless you wish to spend more money on a new one. Don't know why though. Out of the box, and yes, the shaft looked like it had been used, but this is refurbished, right?. Everything else was new looking and it attached easily and quickly to our RYOBI trimmer with no problem. Couple of depth adjustments and we were edging. Nice clean look to the cuts (much better than using string). Very easy to use, but a couple of notes:
This is a rather heavy attachment.
Keep the RPM's high on your trimmer.
Go at a slow to medium pace. Initially, anyway.
If it doesn't attach easily, you are doing something wrong. Probably.
If you bend the curb guide, you are definately doing something wrong.
Keep the sidewalk, driveway, curb, to your left and you're good to go.
Almost want to do it again today, lol.
Customer Review: This Edger worked for me Summary: 4 Stars
This factory refurbished edger attachment came out of the box looking like new. I noticed that the curb guide was bent and obstructed the turning of the edger blade. I removed the curb guide and bent it into it's proper shape, using my bench vise, and reinstalled it. The metal used for the curb guide seems rather soft (this same problem was noted in another person's review). After determining that everything else appeared correct, I put this edger to use.
Operating the edger took some getting used to. You have to find the correct vertical angle to hold the unit and then it worked well. I used it to edge along my sidewalk and curb which had not been edged in years. It did a fine job. Next season (I live in snow country), I will plan on edging more of my property. A neat edge does look nice.
